Macalester vs Middlebury vs Wesleyan [foreign studies, economics, or chemistry, not pre-med, similar net price]

Ok, I stand corrected! Three coffee shops AND a tea shop! My town can only swing one ccoffee shop and one tea shop

Doesn’t that make a huge mess?

There is or was before the pandemic, a friendly rivalry between certain sections of the main dining hall at Wesleyan. The athlete section tended to be noisier than the non-athlete section. It may even have involved two separate wings of the dining hall. Mind you, indoor dining has only just resumed, so it will be interesting to see if things take up where they left off.

However, Wesleyan has one saving grace that is rare in NESCAC and that is its deep bench of performing artists and show-runners who come from all over the country for its theater and film programs. They split the party and events planning responsibilities with the sports teams in ways that non-athletes aren’t quite able to pull off at the other NESCACs. This made for an unusually rich social scene in pre-pandemic times; so again, it remains to be seen whether things can pick up where they left off in the immediate future.

Good to know. Wesleyan is a great college, and these things are really helpful when thinking which college to recommend to specific students.

Middlebury’s population is a tad over 9,000.

Mac is a school many nationally don’t know. If it had the name rec of Wesleyan, he’d already be there it sounds like.

Wonderful school. Highly thought Of by people in the know. Surrounded by commerce so helpful for jobs in what frankly is low paying major.

He wants Mac. Sounds like maybe the family needs convincing. You shouldn’t.

If he gets bored and lonely, as many will, he’d be in a great environment. Don’t forget he will need to spend four years there, day after day after day.

Looked at niche. Similarly ranked for chem. With Wes. Mid a tad lower but still in range.

Mac! The new President is fantastic and the Twin Cities have a lot more to offer than Middletown CT or Middlebury (or Burlington) VT. . Lots to do within walking distance of Mac and wonderful public transportation to downtown. No car needed! (Great airport, too, quite close to campus. Can’t beat the ease of access.)

I don’t know how to feel about post. On one hand, my kid is at Midd. On the other hand, I was born in Minneapolis, and my family is from there.

In all seriousness, though, Macalester was at the top of my kid’s list, and I’ve heard only good things about it.
