Macbook Air 13"?

I really doubt the MBA doesn’t have enough power to do video chat. That’s bull man! I’ve been doing video chat with computers for AGES, a ULV Core 2 will wipe the floor with the stuff I’ve been using lol.

Macbook Airs have been criticized extensively since they were introduced,
but Apple is now selling 2.5 million MBAs a month, so they must be good enough for ‘a few’ users to spend $1,000+ for a little laptop.
More MBAs are sold than Asus sells of all its laptops (2.5m/m vs 1.5m/m)
For the next MBA version, it looks like Mr Jobs is betting sales will increase significantly.

But Stratusfaction, what do you want to do with your laptop really?

There are some things the MBA can do, and it can not do. Tell us what you what do to so you don’t buy an Air and end up getting ****ed when it freezes over doing something you did want to do.

@wwlink Duuuude, I **** you not. I’ve seen the thing hitch up like mad when using Google Talk’s video chat. Why would I make up such a thing? I’m a huge fan of Apple products, but the MBA’s performance has appeared to be disappointing thus far.

"I’ve seen the thing hitch up like mad when using Google Talk’s video chat. "

Probably a browser issue, could be camera/mike drivers…
Try reinstalling Safari, check mfgr of camera for updates.

The biggest issue I have with the MBA as a college laptop is the limited number of I/O ports. Ironically though, both the 11" and 13" have more pixels in the display than the MBP.

Okay, so it ends up that I may be able to get the laptop this summer before I go back to school. I know a lot of you asked me questions, so let me try to respond.

128GB is honestly fine with me. All I do is classwork (essays, notes, research), internet surf, download music (I’m very selective music and I often delete; since I got my iPod back in 2008, I only have ~360 songs on my laptop. I just don’t dl anything. Point of me mentioning this is to say music won’t take up much space), download a few videos that I think are rare or I really like, youtube, netflix (online streaming), and that’s all I can really think of/ I’m very basic when it comes to my laptop.

I’ve read that the new MBA is coming out July 19th, and luckily, the school discount offer expires Sept. 20,2011, so I can still get the discount.

I mean, I’m kinda of torn with MBA vs MBP. Especially if the new MBA is more expensive than the existing ones.

Why would you want to get an Air instead of a Pro? Is it because it’s lighter? Prettier and shinier? Well the macbook pro is not heavy whatsoever. And it’s plenty pretty and shiny. Really, I don’t see why you would choose an Air over a Pro, because your arguments right now seem to all be making excuses for the Air and saying that it’s “good enough”. Well why settle for “good enough” when you can get “better”?

Go with the MBA, I doubt you’ll regret it. As for while settle for “good enough.” well not everyone needs better. So many people, aka rich kids in my school, get top of the line MBPs 17"ers or Mac Pros, and all they do is listen to music with it and browse the web. If you have that kind of money, then by all means get it.

But the MBA does have certain benefits that the Pro does not.

 1. It is CONSIDERABLY lighter and smaller. It’s MUCH more portable. Sometimes, I wish I had an Air for it’s portability.
 2. MBA uses an SSD, not an HDD. With the MBP, I have to worry about it when it’s in my backpack, when people take it from me to use it, and to me, the MBP feels a bit more fragile in that sense.

I say go to the Apple Store and compare the two. That’s where the Air really sells. But wait until the refresh for the MBA comes out, because I bet the processors will be really similar, the RAM will be really similar, and the only noticeable difference will be a bigger screen size, bigger hard drive capacity, a bit more I/O ports, and a SuperDrive.

(Oh and Apple does not increase price like that. It’s rare for them to do so. There’s a higher chance that the MBA might be cheaper than it be more expensive.)

@Hawkings: I’m not making excuses for me choosing the Air over the Pro. MrWheezy pretty much hit the nail right on the head with why I like the Air better than the Pro. I’m pretty sure the Pro is nice but I feel if I have to the money to buy the laptop that is really appealing to me (MBA), then why not get it?

@MrWheezy: Thanks a lot for your help/responses in this thread.

and the upgrade will include thunderbolt and lion. The SSD lets me carry my laptop anywhere and turn it on and be ready to do what I need to do in <20 seconds (from power off)
from sleep its more like 2-8 seconds. :)

I also don’t think a PRO is any better than an Air. CD Drive? lol (external) Worse Screen Resolution? (why would apple do that? idk) Bulky? HDD? Integrated graphics on 13" (I’d go with the 13" 4GB MBA unless you want 15"+ computers)

In my opinion, just wait for the refresh.

I have a feeling that the graphics card (Intel 3000, which isn’t that bad) in the MBP 13" will be the same as the MBA 13".

But the only reason why I would never get the Air, however, is because I play a lot of games  and have a huge music collection (30GB). I could use an external, but I don’t want to have to lug it everywhere and my external CD drive (because I took my internal out) stays in my drawer like 98% of the time.
