I am looking at both the MacBook and the Envy, I like a lot of things about both of them but don't know which one to get. I like the portability and the battery life of the air but It seems a little too expensive. I have had a MacBook pro for a while and loved it, making me hesitant about the envy because of my past experiences with HP products. All i am planning on doing is my schoolwork, listening to music, and watching movies. Which one would be a better buy?

The HP envy series is often considered to be quite a bit different from their other offerings in terms of quality.

As for how it generally plays out the mba is in the ultrabook category, in which there are quite a few sacrifices in exchange for the portability (processing power, I/O ports, etc.) and that largely depends on what you’ll be doing. The HP envy however is more of an all around computer, without anything really going against it. It has a pretty decent battery life (like 4 hours with 2/3rd brightness playing movies) as well as being reasonably portable, however just note that it doesn’t specialize in those categories. As for some uses you have, that depends on if your schoolwork depends on more than just word processing, if you frequently convert music formats, are tied to iTunes, etc.

Go for the MacBook Air. Better battery life, more portable, higher resale value, has Mac OS X.

I’m on my third consecutive Apple laptop, dating back to an aluminum PowerBook G4, and a MacBook Air is going to be my next upgrade purchase.

I have the newest 2011 HP Envy 14. The only pros it has over the MBP 13’’ are quad core processors and the AMD graphics card. If you aren’t gaming don’t get the Envy 14. And… you aren’t gaming, so in my opinion don’t get the Envy 14.

The Macbook Pro 13’’ is a more rounded computer in my opinion. The Air is really cool but you still get more for your MBP.

I only got the Envy 14 because of a $200 discount. Otherwise I would have gotten a 15’’ Macbook Pro if I were rich.

So why is there a question? What is the price difference per day over, say, four years? As much as 25 cents?

A challenger appears!: [ASUS ZENBOOK?](http://zenbook.asus.com/)

Macbook air! No question, battery life is fantastic and who could forget the best customer service ever!

You’re making a mistake by tethering yourself to these two machines. I would have to recommend the MBA over the envy but I’d also recommend it over getting cancer, for instance.

Mac OS X and Windows are two very different feeling OSes in my opinion. Go to an apple store, mess around with OSX and go to a best buy and mess around with Windows. Both are great computers hardware wise, except the envy has a poor battery life. But in my opinion your choice boils down to which operating system you are comfortable with using
