As most of you probably know right now, Mac has an amazing deal going with the new MacBook Pro. You can buy the laptop for $1100 with $100 student discount, and get a free IPod touch with the purchase. My only concern with going through on this deal is whether a Mac Book will be able to handle all Wharton required programs without the hassle of additional conversion. Do any of you have any comments for me on this matter?

I have friends in Wharton with Macs. There are some courses most Wharton students take where having Windows on your computer is necessary to do the work (OPIM 101, Marketing 101, etc). There might also be some upper level stat courses that require Windows only software (though most Wharton students don’t venture far from 101-102). Most Wharton students I know with Macs use bootcamp to do thier Windows work. It’s only a few classes and if you’re willing to shell out the extra dough for bootcamp, XP, etc. then you should go ahead and get a Mac.

/you can use a computer lab and a usb drive if you don’t want to pay for windows/deal with the viruses you might get from windows/having to install virus software.

You probably shouldn’t be getting any viruses if you only use your Windows part of the computer to do homework assignments. Then again I’ve been using Windows in college for 2 whole years now and havn’t had any virus problems knock on wood. I’d agree that you can do the stuff in a computer lab, but if you’re working away on stuff late at night would you rather be in your room or in Huntsman?

well at least personally, I’ve found when I have to use not-my-own computer for a project, I tend to get it done earlier for that specific reason, venkat (as in I didn’t have my own computer for the last 4 months of boarding school and had to use a computer lab, which meant i finished all papers before curfew as opposed to staying up late like I would have if I had my own computer). ymmv

The courses like Marketing and OPIM require lots of group work. Granted, most of your group work will be in Huntsman where you can use a Windows computer, it’s still nice to be able to work in a dorm or elsewhere where there might not be public computers. It’s all about having options and if you can avoid it, why be tethered to computer labs?
