I'm getting a new laptop for college, and I need it to last me all 4 years. I'll mainly be doing word processing, writing essays, surfing the web, watching youtube videos, going on iTunes, etc. I'll also be playing some games like Starcraft II, so I need it to be able to run those too. I don't really have a need for all the video-editing and those types of programs that the MBP offers, but I do like the MBP for its longer battery life, durability, and lack of viruses. Yes, the HP will be much cheaper, but if I do go for he HP I will be upgrading it alot more because it is that much cheaper than the MBP (even with the HP I'll probably spend around $1000). So which laptop would be the better deal for me?

Macbook Pro 13. I haven’t bought it yet, but I have been using the 2009 Macbook pro 13 for a year now. It runs games like L4D2 and Killing Floor pretty good. Graphics for the new macbook pro 13 is worse than the 2010 models I think(Read it somewhere). For everyday use, I think a macbook is fine. I wouldn’t get a HP though. Bad quality and people I know who own HP computers say it sucks. If you want a PC, get a lenovo or an ASUS laptop and upgrade it. You can get an ASUS or Lenovo that has better specs than a macbook and $100-$200 cheaper.

I second avoiding HP for a non-Mac PC. They’ve been in cost-cutting mode for a very long time and their quality has suffered. Maybe the new CEO will change that. I would second Lenovo for a quality company. I’m on the fence over Dell. I have several Dell laptops and quality and performance have been fine but I’ve heard of far more problems with Dell in the last few years.

I third avoiding HP. Useless crap.

fourth on avoiding HP,
seconded on the asus or lenovo.
Quality by apple is no better than quality of either of those two companies.

Definitely go for the MBP. New ones were fully upgraded and newly released. I have a late 2009 13-inch and I love it to pieces - an incredible piece of machinery. I’m no fanboy though, I’ve been down the PC road my fair share. These new MBP’s are supposed to be triple the speed of the previous generation, and given that my computer is already speedy, expect lightning.

If you can ignore the price tag, the MBP is infinitely better!

But are the pro’s of the Macbook Pro worth an extra $800 to $1000? I have no problem with using a PC, but I do like the longer battery life, faster speed, and durability/lack of virus on the Macbook. But is all that worth shelling in about $1800 as opposed to only $1000 on a PC laptop?

Not all HP’s are crap. The Envy 14 is pretty nice.

Just some info, I have a macbook pro, and I personally think the battery life is overrated. Definitely not the 7-8 hours it promises, more like 3-4 on medium brightness.

Get an HP, or any laptop other than a Mac.

Hey,

It really depends on what your study and, of course, your personal needs. I wouldn’t go Mac if your doing something that isn’t very “creative/artistic” but then again you have personal needs.

Macbooks aren’t $800 more expensive than PCs.

Get the 13" MBP for $1200.

My old laptop was a PC, Toshiba. Cost around &1000. I have an MBP 15" now. I don’t play many games, but things like Spore and Sims 3 were so much slower before, they just WORK now. I don’t know how much of it is due to Mac vs. PC or just the fact that it’s newer… But battery life is like, amazingly better, as is service. I’ve never had it run out on me while I’m in class, ever. The PC required being plugged in like every hour.
