MACBook recommendation

I am going to buy a MAC. I have been a PC user.
Majoring in PNP and plan to be PreMed.

Any existing students have recommendations from the deals offered on the wubookstore site?
Which MAC? Software?

Thanks

For starters, i’d say 99.9% of students have laptops so definitely a MacBook Pro (size and GBs are up to you). I don’t believe the WUSTL bookstore offers any specific deals beyond Apple’s general edu discount which you can get at any Apple store. From my experience, I feel that students who bought a new laptop for college already had it upon arrival (myself included) so I suggest getting it a month or so before you fly out for orientation that way you can set it up and become familiar with the programs and usage before classes begin. Since the Mountain lion OS is due out this summer along with the new MacBook, I’d wait for the release of both before buying. In terms of programs, you probably want to get the Microsoft suite. The WUSTL bookstore might have a slight discount on that but it’s generally b-school and engineers who get Word, Excel, PPT for a very reduced price bc their schools offer special pricing.

The wash u bbookstore offes the Office for Mac software for $70.

You can download office for free from the school, they have an agreement with Microsoft. There used to be another page independent of the business school, but this is all that I can find right now. Enjoy!

[Washington University in St Louis - School of Business | Academic Software Discounts](<a href=“WebStore Not Found”>Washington University in St Louis - Olin Business School | Academic Software Discounts)

I don’t think you can get MicroSoft Office for free. I just received a flyer from the school that included a great deal on Office for $70.

I ended up buying the MacBook Pro at the Aplle store. The awash U bookstore has an older version for $100 less.

as someone who just transferred into the business school from artsci, i can assure you that artsci has no specific microsoft office deal. only the b-school and possibly engineering do

Engineering offers Office 2010 for Windows for ~$10, and Office 2011 for Mac for ~$15.

Unless you are going to be doing hardcore rendering and graphic design, a Macbook Pro is a waste of money. I have yet to see any college student use their Macbook Pro for more than a glorified typewriter that can access social media, or gaming. Gaming is a bit more understandable, but you can buy a much more capable gaming machine for half the price of a Macbook Pro.

With that said, if you are still set on a Macbook, I would recommend a Macbook Air. Portable and competitively priced. The decision’s yours, though.

SSDs make a world of difference. Whatever you do, get one. If you really want to splurge, grab one of the new Retinas. Beware of fellow student envy and possible theft though.

I really dislike that the only options now are macbook airs and macbook pros. I like my '08 macbook just fine. If I replace it anytime soon (it’ll be 5 years old when I graduate, but it’s still running better than fine), I won’t be getting a mac - I’m not willing to shell out for a pro & I’d break an air in a day.

Did some more digging and found the old link I used to download Office for free from the school, but the page is no longer up. Looks like only B-schoolers get lucky today.

I think yu can get software for free. Since Olin has a deal with Microsoft, you can download Office for free. You can also buy PC and Mac OS for about $20 each. Though I believe this is available only to Olin students.

Engineering students get a similar deal. Cs students get everything for free.

Mac Office 2011 is free for all engineers.
