Which one do you think is better? My mom said she would get me a laptop for my birthday, and I have no idea what to get! I really like the macbook because it looks cool haha, but I've been using windows all my life.

Which do you think is better? Any other laptops I should consider?

thats exactly why i hate people at my school.

It depends on what she does/what she is used to. If she just does normal stuff like surfing the web, I would go with a dell or HP or something. Vaio's tend to be more expensive, but aesthetically pleasing.

Looking cool or aesthetically pleasing is a perfectly valid reason to buy product A over product B or vice versa. In fact, an intelligent consumer would NOT go online, search laptops, and pick the cheapest one. They would consider their needs, what they want from a laptop, and the price premium they would pay to get what they WANT rather than need. If you value aesthetic beauty in a product, and you're willing to pay the premium, so be it. There's nothing shallow, stupid, or petty about it. I've seen people choose different products for worse reasons.

What is your budget?
What will you use it for?
Are you familiar with Mac OS X?

If its for general purpose, either will be fine. A Macbook starts at about $1000, while the cheapest vaio starts at $800. Mac OS X takes some time to get used to, but its a comparable (and decent) operating system.

BTW, judging a laptop based on appearance is shallow. (This is coming from a person with both a Vaio and a Macbook :p)

It is not shallow. Why is it that every time someone judges something or someone on aesthetics, they become shallow? They just value aesthetics more than anything else. So be it.
