I vote MacBook, so that comes to

Macbook: 6
Vaio: 1
Neither: 2
Either: 1
Not a Macbook: 1

I would suggest going to a local Apple retailer to test it (you don't "play" with a MacBook :-) and see if you like it. The transition from Windows to OSX should be relatively easy considering the ease of use of Leopard. If you don't like it, there's always the Vaio (Sony), HP, Dell, Acer, Asus, Gateway (I don't know that many people that own Gateways . . .), and others.

Macbook: 7
Vaio: 1
Neither: 2
Either: 1
Not a Macbook: 1

Get a macbook. I don't really know anyone who owns a macbook and is unhappy with it, but I know a lot of people unhappy with other computers.

okay here it goes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mac book pro: with 2.6 ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB memory, 200GB at 7200RPM hard drive, 17 inch high resolution wide screen, SuperDrive 8x (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW), iWork '08 preinstalled, Costs $4,128

Vaio with Intel Core 2 Duo Processor 2.6GHz, 4GB memory, 200GB at 7200RPM hard drive, SuperMulti DVD±R DL / DVD±RW / DVD-RAM Drive, LCD 17" WXGA+ (XBRITE-ECO™) (same pixel ratio as macbook's screen), Bluetooth, 1.5 hour longer battery life than the macbook (I added 100 dollars for an extended battery life), Costs: $2749.99

Okay, they have the exact same specs and the vaio costs $1378.01. less than the macbook pro. Yes! And with that 1,378 dollars you could easily build a computer with specs that completely trashed any macbook in existence :)

Here are the links if you don't believe me (you have to configure the computers so just plug in what you want to both computers and compare prices):

CTO | Customize
The Apple Store (U.S.)

And i understand that you budget is 1200 dollars. I'm just showing you the price comparison. This is all fact. Everyone else just told you there opinions :D

See, Macbooks are pretty and easy to use and just overall....nice. PCs in general are more customizable and are usually cheaper. Vaios specifically, eh. I'd get a Macbook unless price is a serious consideration. Leopard's out, which is 23423534x better than Vista.

So hah!

I customized the Macbook too.....and if you're too retardo to comprehend how to use a PC, then be my guest and have a Mac.

What about any type of Unix or Linux PLUS windows that's 999999999999436436896734985723487562389652385 times better than Leopard. and you can have the entire version of Leopard OS on a PC so that doesn't matter at all.

Sheed, I would be getting a regular Macbook, not a Pro.

okay..........well, you can use both those sites to compare with prices and what you really want. But all in all, if you're going into engineering or anything like that, DO NOT get a mac, because there are many programs that do not work entirely on them. And trust me, with a PC, you can get windows, linux, unix, and even Leopard.

Get a macbook easy choice.

To not get a MacBook because it can't run Windows programs would be kinda stupid because MacBooks can run Windows too, therefore MacBooks can run Windows programs. Running Windows on a Mac is much easier than running osx86 on a PC.

Sheed

That was a very bad comparison in price. lol.

First point - No college student unless he was a computer engineer, and even then you would not need all that crap you put on the laptops. Everyone knows getting the latest 2.6 whatever over the perfectly suitable 2.0 is a waste of money, thats why the addon costs $750.

Second Point- It is no secret that Apple charges a premium because its stuff seems to work better and they produce better products. Also they charge alot more for addons which you can buy yourself. Such as the $700 addon for ram which you can buy for $200.

A fair comparison of the two laptops would put you at about 2000 (cheapest macbook pro) vs. 1500ish (around same features VAIO)

Away from that point, the author stated earlier that his budget was 1200. So you would be comparing a entry macbook with a entry vaio. I choose Macbook :)

Dude

Shut up your face :D

macbooks suck, they really do. get the vaio.

i can't stand people who have macs, honestly

I think I'm getting a Macbook!

Or a vaio. haha I don't know!

I'd suggest getting a VAIO.

Though Macbook is a really cool gadget but then its limiting in lots of ways. You dont want to miss Halo 3, do you? :D

As it is most of the stuff is Windows Compatible and now you can get Leopard on your intel laptop also.

So getting VAIO is a win-win situation.

Sheed30: your "cost" justification is wrong, and has been discussed extensively already by lots and lots of people online. Most seem to agree that PCs of similar quality to Macs cost about the same amount.

Mac vs. PC cost analysis: How does it all add up?

For lightweight use like the OP plans, I'd just recommend a MacBook. Honestly, OS X takes about 15 minutes to "learn", and Leopard is orders of magnitude better than Vista. Macs also--at the moment--don't run into viruses or the like nearly as much. They're just much easier to use out of the box, I'd argue.
This isn't arguing fully against PCs...I think Windows is more customizable than OS X, and for power users, I wouldn't be able to make any recommendations at all. For the OP though, MacBook.

running windows on a mac is WAY easier than running mac on a PC

MAC OS is really intuitive, you won't have any trouble figuring it out. take it out of the box, plug it in, and you're golden.

you said you're interested in photoshop programs? adobe designed photoshop for mac computers from the start. pretty much anybody in the graphic design industry would tell you to get a macbook.

can you explain how my analysis doesn't work. What did i do wrong?

YouTube - Mac morons can't talk without using their hands. dumb mac users!

learn how to use a computer. And "running windows on a mac is WAY easier than running mac on a PC" is such bull. I could easily down leopard on my PC with the click of a button. How is it harder? Can you click a mac mouse better than a PCs?
