Macbook vs. Vaio C Series

My parents are getting me a laptop for graduation and they have left it up to me to pick my poison.

I'm not good with computers at all so I don't know any of the technical terms but these are some of the things I'm looking for:
1. A GOOD computer. Long lasting, sturdy, not too difficult to use. I don't need anything too fancy but my dad is big into computers and likes to get them specialized and expects me to do the same.
2. Lightweight. I need to be able to carry this thing around. And I know it shouldn't be a priority but I'd like this thing to at least be somewhat attractive.

So which would be better. Macbook or Vaio C Series...any other suggestions?

thank you thank you!

Macs are known for their sturdiness, and you don't have to upgrade them every 6 months to have the latest and greatest. However, hardware/software choice is more limited. If you want repairs or service, you have to go to an "Apple Certified" store, which in some areas are hard to come by (and where they do exist, it will generally cost more to repair the mac than a PC... kinda like fixing a Jag over a Ford).

Macs are attractive, but so are many PCs (especially since you can choose how you want it to look, what brand you want, etc.).

Customizing is not one of Mac's strongpoints... again, PCs are extremely customizable and can be individualized much more due to the numerous PC manufacturers on the market (as well as being able to build your own).

Cost: PCs are definitely cheaper on average due to the imense competition as well as the endless technology advances (basically, you get one thing that's the best and greatest one day, and one month later it doesn't even make the catalog).

Macs are known for being user-friendly, however, you have to tinker a bit to allow you to get into the "good stuff" and controls. However, you probably don't care about the "good stuff".

I personally would go for the Vaio.

I'd get a Vaio. They look way cooler.

I would go for the Vaio too

I would go for the MacBook. My brother has one (black), and it's incredibly sturdy (much more so than my PowerBook or the new MBPs) and looks really cool. We've brought it on car trips and on airplanes, and the size/weight is perfect for traveling/hauling around! However, I'd wait until Leopard (Mac OS 10.5) comes out, which should be sometime this Spring...

Mac users are going to tell you to get a mac, windows users are going to tell you to get the vaio. And as a mac user, I'm going to tell you to get the macbook. I have a macbook pro that's built like a tank and will likely last forever.

My macbook is built like a tank, I've abused it pretty bad, and still works 100% :)

Macbook pro, the case can get dented sometimes if you drop it. The regular macbook, you would have to crack the plastic to cause any damage to the case.

If you are creative then get a mac
If not get a $300-$500 pc laptop and call it a day

PCs (laptops or desktops) become obsolete a lot faster then macs. So nobody should be shelling out over 1k for one unless they are a gamer , computer programmer, engineer or what ever. If you are just a run of the mill general user you don't need that because as soon as you get it home you will have to upgrade something.

Yeah seriously. If I throw my macbook pro against my car (another product that's built like a tank-98 toyota camry) I'm convinced the mac will DENT my car while the mac itself will be completely intact.

Our old iBook fell out of a window onto the sidewalk and still works (no one uses it anymore, though), and goodness knows how many times I've dropped my PowerBook...

In the end, you really get what you pay for. Mac users (myself included) are going to say 'get a Mac', whilst PC users will say 'get a PC'. It's ultimately up to you to decide. Go to an Apple Store and try them out! :)

VAIO is way hotter. I cannot stand mac computers.

ppl who like vaio obviously has never tried using a mac book. Get a mac if u dont plan on gaming.

there isn't a whole lot I can add to what other people have said. Mac's are more "artsy" : they are nice to look at and have fancy graphics with their applications. PC's are more business-oreinted, and have more software for them.

It depends on what you like, I would agree that you should go to a mac store and try one out! if you get a new vaio, it will probably come with vista...it is nice, but certainly not necessary. It looks more like a mac.

As someone who has owned both a PC and a Mac laptop, I would advise you to buy the Mac. It will last you much longer than the PC. I have had my Mac for close to two years now, and I don't feel as if it is 'aging,' seems ugly and outdated, or is in danger of dying. My PC was nice at first... but slowed down INCREDIBLY with time. It somehow got spyware, even though I never voluntarily downloaded anything, AND I had a spyware detector. It also looked old and 'ugly,' and constantly required updating (although that could have just been due to my dad's influence... he's a computer geek). When my PC crashed (it was two years old, just like my Mac is now), I remember telling my dad that I did NOT want a Mac. I loved PCs. But, my lovely new Mac immediately changed my opinion. I now hate using my sister's PC. Macs are just far more reliable, and kind of timeless (if that makes any sense).

Both have the same 13.3" display, GMA 950 graphics, roughly the same battery life.

The Vaio comes in many more colors like silver, pink, green, blue, the Macbook only in black or white.

The Macbook can run both Windows and OSX, the Vaio can also run OSX but it will be harder than running Windows on the Macbook.

The Macbook doesn't have as many ports as the Vaio, the Vaio for instance has a flash memory card reader.

Running Mac OS X on a Vaio/PC? *tsk! *tsk! *tsk!

the Vaio can also run OSX

Impossible, unless you're a hardcore geek plus it's illegal.
