Machen describes University of Florida - Great Read!

"UF has a $6 billion impact on the state."

By Jessica DaSilva

In a presentation to UF's Board of Trustees during its strategic discussion before its meeting, UF President Bernie Machen said if UF were a corporation, it would be the 16th largest corporation in the Florida.

With a budget of $4.377 billion, UF is even larger than Outback Steakhouse.

Machen said UF's Bureau of Economic and Business Research estimated that UF has more than a $6 billion impact on Florida's economy.

"The Legislature is increasingly aware and recognizes that," he said.

Shands at UF provides about 25,000 jobs, which is almost a quarter of the total job market in this part of Florida, he said.

"We are an economic engine in the truest sense," Machen said.

Well I do not like how they equate UF to a corporation. Do corporations create great alumni, provide societal changing research, or field top athletic programs?

Not such a top athletic program any more ;-) (at least in football)

But I agree that you can't make a head-on comparison between a business and a university. One is solely out for profits and the other is out for research and education. Profits to a lesser degree, but mainly research.

Not so much in Basketball either. The ESPN pre-season poll doesn't even have Billy and his boys in the Top 25. --Freaking sad....

They may not be the best football program this year, but next year they should be pretty sick in both football and basketball. For basketball, they have Nick Calathes and Chandler Parsons, two of the best recruits around, and with a year of training as freshman this year they should have a great team next year, and the football program will only get better for next year.

It's Tebow's first year as a starter, plus they lost over half their D to the draft this past year. Give the freshmen another year to gel, Tebow a full year of experience in the pocket, and Gator football will be dynamite in '08.

Dont forget about Jai Lucas. I'm glad my Nova Cats were ranked (as they deserve to be), but the Gators should be up there. Huge sleeper this season.

The Freshmen did pretty darn good against Flagler... Granted they aren't even a D1 team, but the future looks bright.
