Macromolecular Science and Engineering vs. Chemical Engineering

So Im considering switching to this major (not Materials Science like I listed before since I honestly thought it was the same thing...but I digress)

I met with the department chair and felt right at home. He persuaded me to switch since I would get more opportunities with it and have more support from the department. The only thing I need a clear answer on is what is the difference between the two and which one is better for pharmacy should that be what I decide to do later?

I don’t think either one will really help if you decide you want to Pharmacy later. I guess if you took some biology electives, ChemE would be the way to go. If you really want to do Pharmacy, just get a degree in Biochemistry. If you want to do engineering, I would advise you not to pigeonhole yourself by majoring in a field with a very narrow breadth like Macro. Sci. and Eng. If you like polymers, you should major in ChemE and take the Polymer Science elective sequence, which Case offers. If you want to learn more about polymers, then get an MS in Macro.S.E. later.

I had thought about that too as far as it being too narrow. The thing is that the MSE department has students taking courses in lots of other areas to generalize their education and sort of broaden their “view” (cant think of the right word) as opposed to Chem E which leaves little room for branching out. Also, I talked with some of the alumni that graduated from the program and they all are doing really well. Some of them are going to MIT and other top schools while others are either in grad schools or working and making a decent living with just a bachelors.

Another benefit is that they do offer alot of research opportunities that Chem E here doesnt seem to. In fact, the MSE department makes it so that doing research allows you (the person) to earn credit for some technical electives. They even have summer programs where you can earn alot of money by doing research.

Right now im leaning towards MSE since it appeals to me at this point and upon learning that Case’s program is one of the best in the nation for it. But I just want to get all the facts before I jump ship.
