I am not into politics and the humanities themed housing is in Madision. I do want to be in the nicer dorms. Do you suggest Madision or Thurston? THe politics themed housing is at Thurston but do not really know if people really follow that? ANy advise would be greatly appreciated.

The housing themes really aren't a big deal and don't really count for anything; you definitely shouldn't base your housing choices on them. Go for the dorms you think are nicer.

Which dorm is nicer? I am very social, but also want to do work and sleep

Both are good choices. You REALLY will be able to accomplish work in both, during the first two weeks everybody is noisy and "crazy", but then reality hits and you and everyone else will beging to study at one point. Thurston is -according to my friends- the best experience they could ever have and they don't regret their choices. One of them eneded in a double with a large closet and a large bathroom, looked like a hotel, I visited it, really nice room and the other was in a 6 people and the room was even larger
hope it helps
good luck

Thanks Multitasker. Your insight was helpful...

you're welcome, Meadesport!

I was wondering what your experiences have been at GW.

Hi Meadesport,

I'm a junior and I've lived in 4 different residence halls so far. I've been in nearly all of them (there are dozens!!!). So as far as freshman living:

Thurston: fun, social, more than 1,000 freshman, LOUD. I enjoyed visiting every so often but it wasn't my cup of tea. Doubles, Triples, Quads, Fives, and Sixes!

Lafayette: in my opinion, tied with Crawford. Close to Fridays and Lindys. Doubles and Triples (I believe - they have remodeled a little it's okay)

Madison: Probably my top choice for a freshman on Foggy Bottom. Nice Quads

Crawford: Second fav for freshman. Good Location, the rooms are a little small.

Strong: All Girls, Beautiful, really nice, great view of campus. But then again all girls. Depends on the person.

Mitchell: All singles, decent sizes too. If you want to be by yourself, cool. But if you want to socialize within the room, don't live there.

Mount Vernon Campus: Here is the thing, I lived on Mount Vernon for a year and really liked it. If it isn't your thing, you don't have to live there, but definitely visit and don't miss Fountain Day. That being said here are the order of the halls on the Vern: Somers, Cole, Merriweather, Clark, Hensley, and Pelham.

In terms of other residence halls, I've lived in Munson, Schenley and New Hall. I loved New Hall, my room in the schen was huge (bedroom, living room, kitchen and bath (2 people!)) and munson was small but fun on my floor. I think that every experience is what you make of it. The only place that I haven't heard rave reviews of is Lafayette but check it out at CI and see what you think.

I'm just chilling at home after finals, not a GW freak. I hope this helps. And if you're interested, we have a blog where we talk about things going on at GW. GWblogspot.com Happy Summer!!

im also on the same page as Meadesport its definatly between Madison or Thurston hearing from the stories. I am looking for a double, i will be able to get them because im ED. I want a nice dorm but also want to be social.

if i dont go to thurston will i be missing out or feel left out?
also, i read on GW webpage that there is a micro/freeze and house keeping service at Thurston.
is there micro and house keeping in madison?
and can anyone tell me more about madison and thurston.

Yea, there is a mini fridge/microwave or a regular fridge and microwave in every room. I don't know much about Madison and Thurston since I've never lived in either but Madison is smaller than Thurston. Madison is 1.5 blocks from the metro station, across the street from the library, down the street from Marvin Center, next door to the business school and around the corner from the gym. It's so central! Thurston is 2-3 blocks away from everything. My personal opinion (with Thurston having 1100 students) is to live in Madison, but Thurston is an experience that some people loved. It's up to you really.

Madison is far superior amenity wise. Nicer rooms, better location, nice bathrooms, better views, and they have kitchens. There is just something about Thurston though...

Chico: no room service at Madison, only at Thurston
