Magazine Journalism?

DD has expressed an interest in magazine journalism at the undergraduate level. Would appreciate advice regarding which schools have strongest programs in this field. DD has no geographic preference.

Boston University, Northwestern University...

Magazine journalism is really, really specific. Think broader--journalism, English, history, media studies...

yeah...

NYU, UNC Chapel Hill, Washington & Lee, USC... all have journalism

bump for more advice.

NYU and Columbia have magazine journalism programs but they are masters programs. NYC is the magazine capitol of America.

Ohio University has undergrad

Kent State

Syracuse Newhouse School

Florida A&M

maybe U Missouri

OhioU is the quintessential college experience and they have a major that is specifically magazine journalism. It's inexpensive too (instate anyway). Great school.

Definitely Missouri-Columbia. They are the best when in comes to journalism and they have a specific magazine program.

Syracuse without a doubt. They have probably the best magazine journalism around; as a matter of fact the editor of Cosmopolitan magazine is supposed to fly up this week and give a speech there. Tons of top magazines (Cosmo, Conde Nast, Sports Illustrated, etc) have jobs and internships reserved only for Syracuse Newhouse students.

In oh, there's kent, bg, ou, and osu

Syracuse is great but Northwestern is the best. They have a Magazine Journalism program (VERY competitive though) with incredible internships at major magazines.

Your daughter should contact the magazine journalists she most admires. Usually these folks can be contacted through the magazine their article appeared in. She should ask them where they went to school and what they majored in. I'll bet that NONE of them majored in magazine journalism. The best non fiction writers are well educated generalists who are passionate about people, issues, lives and stories. I suggest your daughter get a liberal education in the best college she can get into, read everything, major in english, politics or history, find a mentor, and write for the school newspaper. College is too early to specialize or spend a semester in a course on how to find an agent.
