A lot of people suggest regular reading of magazines such as the New Yorker and Scientific American to raise SAT scores on the critical reading sections of the sat. What are your suggestions? what are some great magazines or newspapers to read that would increase my familiarity with the english language. IF READING THE NEW YORKER WOULD RAISE MY SAT SCORE EVEN JUST A LITTLE LIKE 1 POINT, I'D BE VERY HAPPY. I am, of course, much more comfortable with math that anything that has to do with english. How can i improve myself?

The NY Times, maybe

Keep a journal, any writing practice will help.

Read widely...read everything you can get your hands on. The New Yorker is excellent, as is the Atlantic Monthly. Scientific American is all right. The important thing is to read every article, whether or not it interests you. Look up every word that is unfamiliar to you. You can't just skim all the articles, skip stuff you don't understand, and then expect to improve.
NY Times is all right, but not great. Regular newspapers aren't as useful because they don't use big words or complex grammar--their purpose is to get the news to you in a fast and easy-to-understand style. Magazines will therefore be better at developing skills.

The New Yorker probably will help you a lot. Scientific American helps a lot too, and will probably help a lot for the ACT if you take that.
