Magor Changes (SLO vs Pomona)

I was accepted to SDSU, SLO and Pomona. I plan to enroll at either San Luis Obispo or Pomona in the fall of 2011. I understand that major changes in SLO are more restricted in comparison to Pomona.

I am an incoming freshmen for both colleges and are currently enrolled in the below majors for each:

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo: Agricultural Engineering
Cal Poly Pomona: Undeclared
SDSU (Not Planning to Attend): Electrical Engineer

To keep it short, I did the applications at different times. I have an interest for Electrical Engineer and aspire to work on circuitry. Upon the SLO app I remembered how much I loved bio and how Bio and Engineering together, in a sense, appealed to Agricultural Engineering, despite how dull the major sounded. Once the Pomona application came along, I realized I didnt know which engineering I should do, Electrical or Agricultural, therefore I submitted as undeclared.

My question is, how difficult will it be for me to change my majors for Electrical Engineering? My primary choice is San Luis Obispo, but Im afraid I will not be able to get into the Engineering Department and will be stuck in Agricultural Engineering. Ive discussed this to my cousins (alumni at pomona and sdsu) to get pros and cons for each of the three colleges, both Cal Polys ruling out SDSU. They are well knowledgeable in Pomona and SDSU’s system but only vaguely know some information for SLO and are not completely sure. I understand that a student will need to be enrolled in SLO for at least 1 quarter before changing majors. Accoridng to their documentation, they state that students will only get a One-Shot Trial Period of 2 weeks to show performance and capabilities. Is this true? How hard will it be for me to change majors to Electrical Engineering? What about any engineering? Im open to Civil and Aerospace Engineering, but Id prefer Electrical. Ive been to SDSU and sat into many of the engineering classes, so I know the material and atmosphere of the curriculum. I have a general understanding of the engineering curriculum.

As for Pomona, there is not One-Shot Trial Period. You can change your majors as much as you want, as long as your not a Junior that is. As for SDSU, you only can file 3 Major Request changes before you’re stuck with the major you are in.

Please someone help me! I dont know if I should chose Pomona or San Luis Obispo. Someone shed light for me. Im pretty nervous and Im confused.

Thanks for your help.

I would suggest talking to an advisor quickly because usually engineers can switch into other majors fairly easily as long as they keep their gpa high and get good grades in some predetermined classes. Switching from different types of engineering could prove more difficult, I would call the school and speak with someone

Adviser lines are open from 8am to 5pm. I called in unfortunately at 5:16, so ill have to wait till tomorrow.
