This is going to sound like a crazy question but... should I have my bank statements and other misc. mail sent to my dorm address? My school is about 1 hour away from my parent's house and I do not have a car (and pubic transportation in LA sucks). So is it a good idea to have mail sent to my dorm address? Is that safe? What do you people do?

From what I understand you get your own locked box for mail, so I think it would be ok. Thats how it is at the colleges I have visited, so I dont see why it would be different.

dont send it to your dorm address since most dorms dont recieve mail. most colleges have a mail room. find out that address and have it sent to your mailbox there.

I have my own apartment but since I’m likely to change place every year or so, I prefer to have my mail sent to my parents’ house. I live about 45 minutes away from there anyway, so I usually go back every 2 or 3 weekends, even if it’s just for a few hours (yay, free food). That way, I don’t have to contact a dozen companies when I move and have to change my address.

I rarely went to check my mail while on campus.
And if you use online banking instead of relying on your bank statements, I wouldn’t bother. It just creates clutter.

If you do want all of that stuff sent to you, make sure you bring a shredder/filing system so you can dispose/keep mail as necessary.

any important financial information i would have sent home, anything else is ok for school mail. for financial information you into online services (most banks offer this). that’s what I do anyways. i have all paper statements sent home and just check online to keep track of my finances. the paper statements just serve as backups in case i have to dispute something in the future.
