Mailing additional information?!

There are a few things that I'm considering including on my Common App as additional information, but I'm not exactly sure how to go about doing this or if I should submit them at all. I initially didn't intend on including these things, but my counselor thinks that they would be a good idea to throw into the mix...now I'm sort of confused.

I feel that some of these are extraneous or not all that relevant, and that adding them may hurt me more than help me. In contrast, my counselor suggests that not only do I send submit these, but that I should do it by mail (they're all diplomas/certificates) and write a brief note to the dean about them. This seems weird to me considering that everything else is online...

One paper is a journalism award that I received this year from the school newspaper. The other is a completion certificate from NYLF (a paid 10 day summer program that isn't all that prestigious). The last one is a diploma that I received in 2006 from Greek school essentially certifying that I am fluent in Greek language, culture, etc.. My issue with the last one is that it's old and from a church (the paper comes off as very religious), and that it's mildly redundant since my app states that I'm fluent in Greek and my essays refer to my culture.

I'm leaning towards just typing them into the box or at the very most typing up some sort of resume (but with so few items, that seems weird. I don't want to restate stuff already in the app).

Your thoughts? Are these things even worth including in the first place? My ECs, recommendations, and essays are all very good in my opinion. My grades are good enough or above average for most schools but a bit short of the 'norm' for my top choices, so I'm looking for as many ways to compensate for that as possible.

I agree with you. They do not seem special enough to send. It would be almost like you don’t think they would believe you earned these certificates if they don’t actually see them. It is odd that your counselor would suggest it. Is he or she very experienced? Is this sort of thing being recommended to all students or just you?
