So I called Residential Services about mailing stuff early for my D- trying to decide how much to mail from here in California and how much to carry on the plane. Res Services said that if we mailed stuff early (but after we know her dorm address) then the mail room would deliver it to her room. A bit sceptical of this, I called the mail room and they said they aren't allowed to deliver stuff to dorm rooms, and that the line for picking up stuff there on Move-in day would be terrible, and that it continues that way for a couple of weeks. Anyone have any experience of this or any suggestions?

I don’t have any experience, but I do have a plan. We are going to fly out a day early. We’ve booked a hotel and will have things shipped to the hotel. Then load it up in our rental car for move in day. Hopefully this will go as smoothly as I envision it.

Reality is somewhere in between. Historically, mail services will not deliver to actual rooms, but they will give you a ride in their van with your boxes from mail services to your dorm. You, of course, still need to go to mail services first, but this way there isn’t any immediacy to get things on day one.

(This is just based on past history, things may change this year)

Thanks sailgirl - I hadn’t thought of shipping stuff to the hotel. I will call and ask them if we can do that.

Dan-I suppose this would work for the things students don’t need on day one, but we would still want to bring bedding, etc. Thanks for the quick response!

If you arrive with boxes and suitcases in a taxi or rental car, can you drive directly to any of the dorms? Or do you have to park in the parking structure and carry everything across campus?

Each dorm has some form of road access. You can park in front/next to your dorm while bringing stuff in.
