One of them said the school is most understated art school for how good it actually is.
I am looking for pre-college for my kid now and whtat I can tell from is, there will be only 40 kids compare to 600 RISD or 250 MICA. Course offering are few and traditional, no tech. I happened to like their paintings better than those in more known schools’ catalogues.
Admission people were so nice and polite on the phone. I can smell Maine-ness already.
It is right in Portland near museums and such. I have never been there but sound lovely.
I would love to hear from students/parents, too. If anyone out there?</p>
<p>My daughter would probably do best in a small nurturing environment, so Maine looks tempting. But I can't find any info about it, aside from their own web site. My daughter will need a summer pre-college program in 09. We're looking at MassArt, RISD, and Maine is in the running.</p>

<p>Summer pre college notification date was 15th and received letter on 17th. Very prompt.
He is accepted in painting major with scholarship but balance due would be something we can not afford and have to decide immediately if he would accept the award or not, so the fund can be used for another student.
Now, the financial aid application deadline has passed and award letters should be all out. If he decline, where the fund would go? To the next year?
What I am wondering is, if we ask, could award amount can be raised using this pool from, say, last year? Or should not bother since they said limited number of PARTIAL scholarships only. How big the most partial can be?</p>
<p>My nephew is at Maine College of Art for illustration - in his second year and is happy with the program and Portland.</p>
<p>Does anyone know what type of job placement success Maine College of Art (MECA) has for students? I've been accepted but since they don't have the name/reputation of some of the more well known art schools like RISD, MICA, Cooper Union etc. I'm kind of ambivalent about whether to accept and attend.</p>
<p>A lot of artists agree, from what I've gathered, that the work coming out of of there is top notch. I think they're building a really great name for themselves - definately look into it.</p>

<p>Completely agree with bears and dogs - the admissions people at MECA are top notch. I actually got a live person when I called and an admissions counselor actually called me to ask if I had any questions after I received my acceptance package.</p>
<p>My son got in there as well. They gave him a merit scholarship of $8000. I was looking for at least half. Oh well....He is going to FIT, not that I can really afford that either.</p>
<p>I'm currently a Senior in high school and am MECA-bound for next year. It's a very expensive college, as are all private colleges, but I believe it will be well-worth the money with the type of education you get.
At an open house last year, a college student from California noted that she had traveled all the way across the country, seeing art college after art college. MECA had the greatest student reactions to teachers - meaning that they thought highly of them.
I'm really excited to go.

<p>It is interesting that you mentioned this school. I actually looked into it for my daughter several years ago. My take is that it offers high quality courses and was, overall, a very fine art school.</p>
<p>The foundation program was also very interesting. You don't just have the required drawing, 2d, and 3 D courses. You actually get to choose electives in those areas. For example, if you want some portraiture or life drawing, you can take this as part of your foundation. It really had an intersting foundation program.</p>
<p>However, I felt that it had two major drawbacks:</p>
<ol>
<li><p>It is a small school. Thus, the offerings in some majors were rather limited. I found this particularly true in their new media area.</p></li>
<li><p>They do require a fairly extensive general education requirement when compared to other art schools, which you may consider either good or bad.</p></li>

<p>Can anyone compare these two schools? Both are small New England schools, that's all I can tell.</p>
<p>I’m thinking of looking into Meca also! for photography. How would anyone rate those courses?</p>
