Does your major make any difference on admission?

i have no idea.. but i hope it does!
what major did you declare?

sadly, for many colleges (including Columbia i think) do take major into account.

Think about it this way: no school wants 90% of it's applicants doing Biomedical Engineering. cough Hopkins cough

Diversity can also relate to majors.

=)

Ok.. so which major did everyone declare?

I'll go first:
1st choice - English Literature
2nd choice - Art History and Visual Arts
3rd choice - Philosophy

I think it's less of a factor than it used to be, like people from all majors are probably about the same. They do need to pay attention to it somewhat so that they can make sure they have enough resources and a balanced student body.

undecided. film studies, psychology

My first choice is Neuroscience, and I can't really remember what I put for my other choices, maybe it was just biology and psychology. Really though, I just want neuroscience.

1) biomed eng. 2)undecided

1) Mathematics
2) Music
3) Philosophy

i think major can make a difference...especially if you put down a major you show a great passion for

major that you choose when applying doesn't make a difference at all. i've spoken to one of the heads of admissions and students currently at columbia. it's just for them to see what your interested in. you can choose to major in chemical eng... in the app... and after getting in decide to do electric engineering.

hahahaha lolboyer, I thought you were going to give a REAL example...like put down major in east asian studies, but then up studying law but you just changed from chemical engineering to electric engineering.....going crazy there.

LOL freakish!

Daria: heh, we have the same 3 prosp. majors! my first choice is psych though, though neuroscience/behavior def. has a close second...

Let me bring this gud or BAD news to u guys- the major does play a significant role in admissions esp in CU! the head of admissions committee told me that they are wanting a "diverse" student body in respect to their majors and academics...so they dont want the typical stuff...rather those who put rare and unusual majors did a gud thing!!! gud luck to all of u!
-peace with all

I highly doubt that a major would make a big difference like you said arsalan. You're absolutely not BOUND to the major you put on your application. It's something like 80% of college students change their majors during their four years. So everyone and their mother can put that they want to spend their lives studying African Click Language just to get into the school, but I think admissions have caught on to that. It'll just make you seem silly if you're putting yourself down for the most obscure majors out there just to gain an advantage.

go Daria and gl0ry!!!!! Neuro all the way!!!

Neuroscience is for sure where it's at. Best major at the best place to take it which is coincidentally the best college in the best city. Yeah, I'm a fan.

"So everyone and their mother " hahahahahaha.. the everyone and their dogs and mothers is creeping in again lol..

ummmm.. well i hope majors do count.
did anyone else put art history and visual arts?

80% of college students in the nation change their majors during their college careers. Columbia's no different. The major you pick will indicate to the admissions committee what you are currently interested in. Nothing more.
