major affecting admission? (UC)

I've heard that applying for certain majors at the harder UC's (UCB, UCLA, UCSD) makes it more difficult to get in.

More specifically, I've heard that EECS (my preferred major) is much harder to get into Cal than say, Architecture. (same thing i've heard with BioEngineering/Business/Undeclared).

Is there any truth to these rumors? And if the admissions process is more difficult, does it only vary by college(arts&letters vs. engineering) or by specific majors.

At UCLA, on accepted students day for engineering, they did say it was harder to get into the College of Engineering than into the College of Letters and Science last year. I don't know if they limited by major within the college of engineering. The EECS majors were by far the largest group of engineers at this particular gathering, triple the size of civil engineering.

That is indeed true. L&S majors are generally about the same difficulty (as in, as difficult as it is to get into Berkeley), though there are some competitive majors there too -- e.g. biology.

How competitive is economics at Cal? What about Bioengineering at UCSD?

acqua, have you not looked at the FAQ on the admission site of any UC school about how they select kids for Letters & Science?

Within the Colleges of Engineering, intended major does matter. Within the College of Letters and Science, intended major does not matter.
