I'm gonna be an ILR major at Cornell and i don't want to transfer out of it or attempt to. The major itself offers plenty of flexibilty at "feeding my curiosity."(a bit of business, a bit about the workplace and interactions, and bits on law) Plus, I like the way the name of the major sounds.
Is it possible to minor in Operations Research as an ILRie? There is a growing popularity for this major or minor. I read engineer students are the only ones who can do a formal AEM minor, so I ask because I can not seem to find any restrictions on ILR and op. reserach. To make sure, I want another source of answers.

and if it is possible, any opinions on operations research’s difficulties.

Of course!

[Minor in Operations Research and Management Science](http://www.orie.cornell.edu/orie/academics/undergrad/programdescription/ormsminor.cfm)

The one thing you are going to want to do is talk to the ILR student services to get out of the ILR statistics requirements. Also make certain that you take the math requirements (the four semester calc sequence, either in Arts or Engineering)

what’s the four semester calc. sequence?

In Engineering we only have two calculus classes.

The four semester math sequence is:
Math 1910 - Single Variable Differential and Integral Calculus + Sequences and Series
Math 1920 - Multivariable Differential and Integral Calculus
Math 2930 - Differential Equations
Math 2940 - Linear Algebra

You don’t really need MATH 2930 for an ORIE minor though.

i don’t entirely understand the requirements. They have a list on the OR/MS webpage of the three courses I choose from a list, but i need another three or more courses. What are the other additional courses I have to take? and how do I pick those?

The only reason you need these courses is because of pre-reqs. They don’t explicitly list them here because most people who minor in ORIE would be engineers, so they have already done these courses.

The courses you require for pretty much all the courses listed there are MATH 1910, MATH 1920, and MATH 2940. Those are the basic prereqs for most ORIE courses. ORIE 4580 has the additional prereq of CS 2110, but I wouldn’t rush to do this course unless you’re particularly interested in programming or are set on doing ORIE 4580, since there are other courses that have less preqreqs.

Basically what I’m saying is, if you want to do an ORIE minor, start with MATH 1910, MATH 1920, MATH 2940, and then go from there.

okay. thank you
