Major and Top Programs

I am a junior in high school and I am starting to make some decisions for college. I aspire to be a sports writer one day. Heres my question: Should I major in history, english, or journalism? Which one will prepare me the best to become a great writer? I was thinking of majoring in history or english and minoring in journalism, what do you think? And what schools would have a top combination in history and journalism or english and journalism? Thanks!

major in journalism
double major or minor in secondary physical education or English
go to Syracuse

Ryno, Penn State has a sports journalism program. Not sure what the best combo is but other strong journalism schools are Northwestern, Missouri and Ohio University.

Yeah, go to Syracuse and major in journalism if you can. That's pretty much the place to go for any kind of sports reporter.

anyone else. I'm seriously considering some concentration in history to go with journalism. All descriptions say history develops reading, writing, and critical thinking skills, all useful in journalism. Plus, english may be too hard core and I find history to be more interesting. Thanks for all the opinions.

If you want to be a journalist, it's a good idea to have a strong foundation in the area you want to report in. You can obtain this by real-life experience (i.e. internships or working at your school's/town's paper) and with academic programming. In your case, a large school with strong sports would be the best place to get the experience you need. Penn State or Syracuse would be optimal. Mizzou would be good, too. Northwestern, not so much.
