I'm currently starting my Junior year of HS and I would like to figure out what I want to major in for college so I can choose a good college for that major.

I've known for a while I would be happy with a career relating to technology and media somehow, but I've come to realize that's not specific enough.

I have interests in computer science. I am taking AP Java and have learned to program simple iPhone games and apps on my own. The reason I am posting this in the business section is because I think I am more interested in the business side of creating an app, promoting it, designing it and selling it.

My optimal career would be to be CEO of my own web startup. With that said, what sort of major
Or major/minor do you think would fit my interest in software/web development, advertising and graphic design and business?

Forget minor in accounting. Take one class or self-learn it. You just need to know the basics. You hire an accountant for everything else.

When you get to college, get a CS degree w/ high gpa. Right now, get open source experience. Read Sean Parker/Zuckerburg bios. Follow their lead.

^^He’ll “hire an accountant”? Really? And what do you suggest he do while he can’t AFFORD to hire one? Or are you naive enough to think he would be able to afford an accountant early on? My bill rate is $400+/hr.

Funny you say “forget accounting” and mention Zuckerberg, who has said several times he wish he had understood accounting early on.

Most people aren’t going to hire PWC to do their taxes at a small business. At a small company with not much going in and out, you can use Quickbooks to manage your books (fairly easy to learn) and pay a CPA about $1000 per year to do your taxes. If you need to outsource payroll, places like Intuit will cover that for you for about $100 per month.

So, no, you don’t need to be an accountant to run a small start-up and it won’t cost you $400 per hour. Now if you’re a $25 million web startup, you’ll probably want a staff accountant for $60,000 - $70,000 per year.

Are you a partner at a big 4? It comes down to 768,000, assuming that you only bill 40 hours per week. Or is it that you bill one hour and work for a few days lol?

frznpixel, regarding a major, I agree with workingATbig4 on that one–“Computer Science, minor in accounting.”

^^Nope, just a senior. Hell, we bill interns at $175/hr now.

In case you’re confused: the bill rate is what we bill the clients for our work. So yes, if I am one of 2-3 seniors on a semi-large engagement that I spend most of the year on and the job is worth $8-10 million that makes sense, right?

Oh they pay the managers and partners much, much more. =D
