Major change? How hard really?

Well, my son, who decided to stay with his Animal Science major, vs changing to Bio is absolutely loving life! He is really happy with Animal Science. Did well his first qtr with a 3.67 gpa. His classes are much much harder this quarter - in english, calculus, cell & molecular biology and equine science. He's also in a foaling enterprise, which consumes a lot of his time, but he loves it. The kids work two 5-hour shifts a week, checking on the pregnant horses and cleaning their stalls (even has shifts from 2:00-5:00 am). He got a call at 4 am last week that one of the horses was giving birth, so he treked the mile to the horse unit to help! He really likes all his teachers. I know he stays up really late on weekends, so it worries me that he can keep up the pace and get everything done well during the week. But, so far so good. Would love to hear from anyone else that has a child in the pre-vet area!

He is so happy in Sierra Madre dorm. Made friends really fast and really is having fun! My only complaint is that he doesn't call very much :(

CalPoly mom I just want to thank you so very much for this update. It's marvelous that your son is enjoying his time at CPSLO so much and that he has decided to stay in the animal science program. I have shared your post w/ my D and she is as excited as ever to hear from CPSLO

Update: Well, about 3/4 of the way thru the year, our son officially changed his major to Biology! I know he enjoyed working hands on with the animals, but something clicked and he decided it would be better to major in Bio. So happy! And it was an easy change since he had already taken some bio classes and was in good standing. He will be taking an extremely hard load next qtr (fall): another hard bio class, chemistry, physics and another calculus class (ugh). And while we were driving the other day, he told me he probably won’t go to vet school - almost hit a car on that one! Wow - he’s wanted to be a vet since 6th grade. He said he doesn’t want to give dogs shots every day. I know that working at the vet really helped him make his decision. We actually paid him to volunteer at the local vet when he was a jr in h.s. - wanted him to do it, to make sure that’s what he wanted to do. The office hired him after 3 months and he now has a job anytime he needs one! He’s not sure what he wants to do now - but that’s okay - that’s what college is for.

CinniesMon, did your daughter get in??? If so, I’m sure she will love the animal science program. Our son really did enjoy it. And she will love the campus and town.
