So am currently doing mechanical engineering , my first year of college i didnt take any engineering classes because i was in this program “pre-engineering” to get into engineering and i got in . I am currently in my second year now taking mechanical engineering class in my second semester and dont think i will make it far . Been stressed and down thinking i wont make it all the way . My gpa is also low at 2.98 and still got fours years to go . I dont know if i should switch out or just keep trying . What can i switch into that involves the classes i have taken, im so stressed and really need help and ideas of other majors thats not engineering
No one can really answer your question until you give us a better idea why you’re struggling, which courses are causing you the most grief, what you’ve taken so far, and what you’re interested in. Until then, take a deep breath. It will all work out.
I am currently taking intro to mechanical engineering , statics, calc 3 , physics 2, i just hear alot of people dropping out of engineering and i think imma fail and keep thinking negative , i hear people switching to maganment , finace and i dont know what i want to do in life that why im confused on what i should do , I want a good paying job but engineering isnt for me and i dont want to drop it cuz feel like my prent will think im a fialure , basically doing engineering because my older brother did it . Im not happy and dont know what i want to do for the rest of my life
“…that['s] why im confused on what i should do.”
You’ve got to decide if you want to be an engineer of not. It’s that simple. If you answer yes, you’ll figure out a way to succeed. Put the negative thoughts out of your mind and get it done. Every year thousands upon thousands do.
If you answer no, then you should switch now. What you have taken can have some bearing on your new choice, but I wouldn’t give it much weight. Otherwise you risk ending up in something else you don’t like for the sake of efficiency. Doing what you want will lead to the highest likelihood of success.
Figure out what you like to do. College is 4, sometimes 5, years. Your working career is 40 years.
“I am currently taking intro to mechanical engineering , statics, calc 3 , physics 2” - Well that says a lot. You got through calc 1, calc 2, physics 1. Don’t be so hard on yourself. Just work hard this semester and see how it goes.
I also think you should be more pragmatic, a 2.98 with your classes isn’t dreadful. Keep working and see how it goes. Lots of the drop out kids will have been due to calc1, physics 1, not your level.
So a 2.98 isnt that bad? I like doin all this work but just feel like i wont make it , and been thinking and couldnt find anything that i would like to switch into
So far this semester i am doin okay colorado mom , i just hope i can keep my gpa up . Just keep stressing over test and quizes been passing all tho , got an intro to mechancal one today and dont know why but struggling through this easy class and pssing the hard ones
Just keep working at it. I did know some freshman classmates have liked that 2.98 GPA. Theirs got better over time, and I bet yours will too!
Having essentially a 3.0 after taking most of your math/science prereqs isn’t that bad at all to be honest. Statics can definitely be a rough course (at my college it was a common weed out course) but if you can get through this semester then you are probably in great shape to finish up.
For me, Statics was a laborious in the beginning when I was doing problem sets the hard way. Once I started doing a more efficient vector approach it got easier.
You are not alone. Everyone is crying themselves to sleep. First year not the hardest, but the transition from high school to engineering majors is brutal. You will get used to the workload soon. It will still be tough, but your body and mind will be much stronger and able to handle (absorb) it.
I would change optics on the 2.98. You are still in it. That is an incredible victory. You have a choice on whether to stay or leave. Those around you are being told to leave engineering. Every hour that passes by and you stay in that seat is a massive victory.
The key and many get this too late… forget getting through college on your own. Impossible. Ego? Gone. Pride? Gone. Ask anyone and everyone for help. Get study groups. Setup Slack channels. Go to every office hour, whether you need help or not. Stop by Health Services for chat. You cannot do this alone. Engineering takes a village. Lean on each other, big-time. Talk it out. You will find in the end you are in better shape than most.
