I was accepted into UCSB and I’m changing my major from Mathematics to Mathematical Sciences. Do I have to write an essay?
Or is it simply enough to write to them that I’d like a major change from x --> y ? Are there any samples I can see?

You cannot request a change of major until after you get to the UC. You may be able to get the ball rolling at orientation, not sure. But not now. You fill out some forms and have to get approval from your college and major dept.
I was able to change my major simply by emailing admissions office. Correct me if I’m wrong, but on the UCSB portal it allows you to change your major.

Well in the letter it says " … or you may select another major from those listed on our website" and the website it took me to was this http://admissions.sa.ucsb.edu/major-changes
You’re right about the waiting part though! It says here there’s a 2 week wait. Am I not reading something? Thanks for your response!

Was it just a regular formal email? 
I just want to make sure so I don’t accidentally write them a book when they didn’t ask for one haha
@NookLines It was a simple to the point email, well the first email I sent was asking how to change my major. The admissions office worker wrote to email the office again to confirm my major change. I basically wrote "I want to change my major from ________ to __________.

It took them six days to process mine and it was really simple. Here what I wrote:
Dear Office of Admissions,
Name: Perm Number:
I am requesting a change my major from Pre-Political Science to History of Public Policy.
“Fall 2014 Grades”

I guess its fun to play UC adcom, even if the actual policy can be found on the web or by checking with UCSB admissions. Of course had the kid listened to you and done nothing now they would have faced this

Hey @NookLines, it does appear you can do it at UCI via online. I was working off links that I guess had old data, noting you need to be enrolled (not merely admitted).
That’s absolutely ok! I assumed it was a simple error or maybe other campuses have different rules! Thank you for clearing it up however, I really appreciate it 
My friends told me UCSB isn’t that strict with changing majors, so you’re all good! (:
Plus, that’s in the same department, so I doubt you have to do anything special.
