Major Choices

So I was admitted into the class of 2014 at Pitzer and I love the school. I am interested in majoring in Computer Science or Engineering. Neither of these majors are available at Pitzer. I was looking through the majors available at the other Claremont Colleges and Harvey Mudd only offers Computer Science or Engineering as a major. How hard would it be to major through Harvey Mudd even though I am a Pitzer student?

An actual Pitzer student can clarify what the restrictions are for off-campus classes (I know that we have a limited number we’re allowed to take at Mudd), but the sheer number of requirements for the engineering degree here seem like it would make it implausible to do an off-campus major in it.

I’m pretty sure it’s been done before, but the people who could best answer this would be the school itself. Try calling the office of admission (1-800-PITZER1) and if they can’t help, try talking to one of the other dean’s office. Now that you have been admitted, it is in the school’s best interest to give you as much information as possible. So just ask, and see if it helps!

Hi, As a current Pitzer student I am pretty sure it is easy to major at another Claremont. The only thing I would be concerned about if I were you is the requirements of Mudd’s majors. I know Harvey Mudd is known to be pretty intense with its graduation requirements (I’m not sure about the majors), and most students average 6 classes per semester to graduate in 4 years, while at Pitzer (and a typical college) the average is only 4. This really depends though and I could be totally wrong. So you can ask your assigned advisor when you get to Pitzer about the majors at Mudd, but they will probably direct you to Mudd’s advisors, so you will probably want to check with them before committing!

I’m fairly certain you can’t major in Mudd’s engineering, even Mudd engineers only have room for 1 extra class (maybe more after the core changes, but still not much). Computer science may be possible, though I know that Pomona has a CS major that might be a bit more feasible.

Good thread, hoping someone will add on…

What did you end up doing?

Would it be a problem if I wanted to major in Japanese? It is off campus…so is it possible???

No it will not be a problem. If Pitzer does not offer a major that is offered at one of the other Claremont Colleges, you can take that major at the other school.

There are some exceptions to the rule, such as Mudd’s Engineering major, and a few others I can’t think of right now.
