"Major" confusion

I've started the college selection process, and it's kinda hard to pick out perfect schools if you don't know what you want to major in. :( I'm interested in

-plants and animals
-earth science
-English/literature
-history
-working outdoors
-sailing
-lots of travel

Is there a major/career that fits these criteria? Will I have to double major?

Well, I think that you have a number of options. Just from scanning these criteria, I think that you might like a major such as zoology, marine biology, or oceanography - how do those sound? I have no idea how you would work literature or history into those, though. I think that double-majoring would be a good option, possibly. And don't think that double-majoring is necessarily terribly difficult - if major overlap, it's not so much worse than single-majoring (I'm tripling in math/physics/applied math, and those overlap so much that it's not so bad).

Thanks! I don't mind double majoring; I just want to study something that completely interests me. The majors you mention sound really interesting.

Keep in mind that you might more easily take classes in all the fields by single majoring and using the electives that would be eaten up by double majoring in various classes. Depending on the policy of your future school, double majoring might be hellish, really easy, or somewhere in between.

Finding a school with English, literature, and history will be easy. Finding a school with earth sciences might be a bit harder and finding a school with animal studies will be the most limiting. Keep this in mind. Also, check out archaelogy and classics, as it incorporates literature, history, and potentially traveling and being outdoors.

Seeing as you're intrested in travel and English/literature in addition to the other stuff...maybe think about becoming a writer who focues on science issues?

HIPPO - With your interests - you may want to consider checking out environmental types of majors - oceanography - coastal environmental - naturalist- outdoor and recreation management types of majors - - all can include the interests you list - plants/animals/etc... there are many directions you can follow in these fields - including your interest in english/lit/writing - ourdoor/sailing/travel - even add to your interests as well - (to include scuba certifications/photography/etc.....)

One school you may just want to paruse their web site is East Carolina University in North Carolina - actually has all of the interests on your list - as I am sure there are other schools that do as well. But by checking out the offerings you can get some idea of what is out there for you. You may even find that you may be able to be somewhat creative and combine several of your favorites into a very productive major that suits you. It is possible to double major to encompass most of your interests as well.

From experience I pass this on - you will certainly want to consider schools that offer a multitude of course/majors offerings - that is usually the larger university's - just in case you want to change direction once you get there - it will be easier to do lateral moves than to have to consider transferring if the school does not have what you may want.

We were in that position - kiddo started out as Physical Therapy major - decided against this after 2 semesters - but was able to land in another major pretty easily - which kiddo loves!!!!! - and is actualy along the lines of your interests in many ways - did not have to consider any transfer as the university had many many options to consider - which also allowed her to be pretty creative to include some very strong interests she has - into her major as well.
