MAJOR DILEMMA: taking AP Calc test w/out the class

Due to scheduling conflicts I can't take AP Calc and have to take Honors Calc instead...so my senior yr instead of having 3 AP classes (the other two are AP Chem and AP English) I'll have two. So at the end of my senior yr my total number of ap classes will be 3 (AP Bio, AP Chem and AP Eng). I got a 4 on the AP Bio test. Should I self-study for the AP Calc test in May or should I just concentrate on the millions of other things I'll have to do. Also, my school only offers 6 AP classes...so in context of what my school offers will I look mediocre or...

If you’re taking Honors Calc then I don’t see why it would be a problem to self-study for the exam. Just get a good review book to go with the class.

Haha…thats exactly what I did.
I selfed the AP-part while being in Hns (late scheduling issues).
Trust me, the material is 95% SAME (for AB). BC, you’ll have to do a bit more but its not impossible. You can ask a BC teacher if you can sit-in during one of his/her BC classes for two weeks or so (preferably in April when they’re reviewing for the AP itself). Tell the teacher that you’re interested in taking the exam but couldn’t get into the class because of scheduling problems.
You’ll actually have more practice if you do it this way (Calc twice a day ftw). I didn’t have to study a thing before the actual test and got a 5. Good Luck.

I’d definitely go for the self-study of AP calc, especially BC. Not only is it not too hard, per what others have said, but if you plan on going into math or science in college, it’s pretty important.

I would self study it. You would already have the basic and slightly advanced concepts down with the honors class, and a good review book would probably take care of the more advanced topics. Good luck!

You should definitely self study it. Like other people have said, Calc BC is really not THAT hard, and you’re already in Honors Calculus. Get a good AP prep book and then study the material you covered in class out of the book and learn advanced concepts as you go and you’ll probably do really well.

You’ll be alright self-studying AP calc AB even if ur class is Honors Calc.

The AP Calculus exam is not very hard, and I think that if you’re a math person you should even try looking into BC although it will require some discipline

Talk to the teachers that teach Calc AP and see what they’re doing to get their classes ready. I’m sure they would be glad to help. At my school, for example, the teachers order these practice test books which were VERY close to the real AP test. If your teachers do something similar, you can ask them to order a book for you since some books can only be ordered in bulk. Teachers might also host practice test sessions to stimulate the conditions of an AP test, which could be beneficial for you to attend.

As for the material itself, I don’t see any reason why you can’t self study, especially if you’re already taking the Honors course.

Yea I find that BC actually isn’t THAT much more than AB. Theres maybe 30% more stuff that you will need to know, but its not bad. You get an AB subscore too, which is great if you don’t pass BC.

Thanks…and I’m actually more skilled in the humanities, but I’ll self-study for AP calc AB!
