Major for pre-med?

So I want to do the pre-med path at UF but I don't know what major to pick. I want to pick something that I can fall back on in case pre-med doesn't work out for me. I don't really want to major in Biology or Psychology. I was thinking about majoring in Accounting or some other business degree. Has anyone done this before? What's the coursework like? Just for some background, I've taken the AP's of Psychology, Statistics, Chemistry, Physics B, World History, US History, Calculus AB, Macroeconomics, English, Literature, Human Geography, and Government. Passed all of them.

I think Health Sciences with the pre-professional focus is meant for pre-med students. Here’s exactly what the undergrad catalog says:
“Students interested in health careers requiring strong basic science backgrounds, such as medicine and physician assistant programs, should enroll in the preprofessional specialization.”

Is there a place where we can see the classes required to take for a health science major? i want to be a physician assistant and i thought Biology was the only major that would make sense to take but i think i can consider Health Science now too.

As a pre-med student, you can major it whatever you what. It doesn’t have to be biology or health sciences, you just have to take the required courses (bio, gen chem, orgo, physics, biochem, calc/stats, english, some schools want humanities/social science as well) and get a high overall & science GPA. I have a friend who is a pre-med Finance major, and he’s doing fine.

However there are a couple of advantages to being a science major as a pre-med student. (1) You take MANY more math/science classes beyond the basic requirements for med school, so making up for a bad grade in a science class is easier than it is for a non-science major who only takes the med-school prereqs.
(2) You don’t have to go out of your way to fulfill the pre-med requisites. For example, my Finance major friend has to take all of his pre-med requisites while making sure he stays on track with his major, which can sometimes be a pain. I’m a pre-professional Biology major, so all of the med school prereqs are requirements for my major anyway. So, the classes I need for my major are also required for med school, meaning that I never have to compromise my major requirements to stay on track for med school (and visa-versa).

As for what the courseload is like…I would check out the course plan for your intended major in your undergrad catelog. If your interested in health sciences, then considering attending the presentation for the College of Health & Human Performance during Preview or speak to a pre-med advisor later on.

There is an Animal Biology option under the Animal Science major that says it is for pre-professional students as well, if you like animals.

Here is the link for the courses:
https://catalog.ufl.edu/ugrad/current/publichealth/majors/health-science.aspx</a>
There are 5 different tracks, but I think pre-professional is what you would want.
You could also email or talk to a counselor at the UF med school and ask them what major is preferred when they are admitting students for grad school, or which major is the most common.

chemical engineering!

Chemical Engineering is a bad idea, unless it’s something that you’re REALLY interested in. By no means is it easy. I chose biology because it’s a subject that I’m very interested in, there’s a pre-professional track which will ensure that I take the courses necessary for medical school, and also it allows me to freely choose 4 of my upper-division electives from a wide selection of courses, whereas other majors simply lock you in to a program that you MUST follow, and the only freedom they give you is choosing gen eds.

first off, most medical schools don’t accept ap for the pre req sciences like chemistry and physics so you are either going to want to retake those at college or take higher level chemistry and physics. secondly, they have added even more pre reqs for pre med, now you have to take sociology, psychology, biochem, and I think genetics or microbiology. so keep that in mind.

Major in whatever interests you. I hated biology and most sciences (only had an interest when it came to the heart), majored on French, and have been a Cardiologist for 13 years.
