What should you major in (and what courses are helpful) in order to become a technology analyst at major financial companies such as goldman sachs? or does becoming one require more on-the-job training rather than formal courses?

Do you mean someone that follows technology companies or areas of technology or that studies how it can be used in the company itself?

I did a summer as a technology analyst at a BB firm–technology analysts are essentially the engineers at the banks. Everyone was CS or EE. EE wasn’t really useful but most of the EE kids knew a fair amount of CS, so it worked out fine. They won’t be teaching you how to code, so you need to know that beforehand. Really, I wouldn’t recommend the position–its definitely back office and you get treated as such.

If you are talking about being in research and you want to be in the technology sector, then it doesn’t matter what classes you take. It’d be good to be able to show some demonstrated interest in the technology sector, but really which team you end up in within a division is fairly random (i.e. not all groups are always hiring).
