I’m going to Northeastern in the fall, and got into the honors program with a double major in Biology and Political Science, however I am thinking of switching to Psychology since I did really well in AP Psych and got a 5 on the exam. Also, I feel like it would be very difficult to get a good GPA with a double major. However I want to have the very best chance of getting into medical school. Should I make the switch or keep my current major?
I’d point out that it’s a combined major, not a double major. A combined major shouldn’t mean more difficulty, it just means more courses will be spent between the two majors instead of electives. The degree won’t take more credits than any other degree, and usually does this by trimming upper-level requirements for both majors, giving you a solid foundation in both but one not as extensive in-depth knowledge as a single major would give comparatively.
Why did you pick PolySci in the first place? Did something change besides doing well in psych? If no, why not try out the combined major first semester and go from there? If you’re good at your two majors and can handle the workload if it ever combines to be more than the electives, that can even increase your GPA. It all depends really. You can always drop one of the two majors as you feel like it.
As some have mentioned in other threads of yours, most pre-med students don’t go to med school. I wouldn’t make all your decisions based on that quite yet.
If you enjoy psychology then switch your major to psych. The most important thing for getting into medical school is having the highest GPA possible and high MCAT. You can be any major from art to bio and still go to medical school. All you need are the science pre-requisites which you can take with any major. Do what you enjoy studying so getting straight A’s is enjoyable.
You should major in what you think you will enjoy the most. Medical schools will consider any major so long as you do well in your science requirements.
