Major GPA vs Overall GPA

Just out of curiosity, are your two GPAs similar? And if they aren't, what's the difference? For example do you have a 4.0 major gpa and 3.4 uc gpa etc etc. I'm super curious what kind of stats everyone has and what major everyone is..

Right now, my overall UC gpa is 3.85 and my major GPA is 3.33.

After this semester, I expect my major gpa to increase to 3.5 or 3.75 and my overall GPA to decrease to 3.81 or 3.75.

@Cayton what schools did you apply to? What’s your major?

I applied to UCLA, UCSB, UCSD, and UCI. My major is philosophy. How about you?

Cayton, why didn’t you apply to Berkeley?

Because I know right off the bat that I’m not getting accepted there, Snorlaz. I didn’t complete one of the prerequisites for Berkeley’s philosophy major because I dropped it last semester. Moreover, I don’t have many ECs to speak of, which are still fairly important to Berkeley. Surprisingly, UCLA doesn’t care much about ECs, although people think they do.

UC GPA: 3.2 Major GPA 4.0
Major: Sociology

Yeah, UCLA doesn’t care about EC’s. I think you’ve got a shot at Berkeley though even if you don’t have that one pre-req. 3.85 GPA is pretty solid.

@Snorlaz

I suppose, but I already submitted my application and I’d have to pay $70 to apply there…

…you know what? I’ll take your advice to apply there. It couldn’t hurt. I’ll go do that now. Thanks for the suggestion, man.

That’s the sprit. You’ve already lost if you don’t try. Plus you know you would spend the rest of your life wondering if you would have gotten in.

Yeah, I see what you mean.

Plus, if I do get in at Cal, I’d still SIR to UCLA if accepted there. I’d tell everyone that I chose UCLA over Cal. :P

For the most part overall GPA matters the most because the vast majority of majors don’t require rigorous courses for transfer.

@bomerr

So you’re saying that I have a decent shot at Berkeley?

What is your Major? If it’s Business, Biology/Science or Engineering/CS, then that 3.3 will hurt. If anything else you have a good shot.

It’s philosophy. The 3.33 gpa is only in my major classes. My overall is 3.85.

According to assist.org there are only 3 Philosophy classes for the major and none even exist at my local CC. Even so, that is only 9 units compared to the 60+required for transfer. So ya I think you have a shot for Berkeley, I doubt they would weight the major GPA heavily. Apply now before it’s too late.

If you were applying to Haas and the prereqs were calc 1, calc 2, stats, econ 1, econ 2, english 1, english 2, & business 1. Then yes, major gpa would be weighted heavily but not for liberal arts philosophy degree.

I already added Berkeley and paid for the application fee, so I’m good to go.

The weird thing is that there are courses just like those required by Berkeley for philosophy majors—I’ve taken two of them so far(Dropped one, unfortunately) and am taking another right now, but according to assist.org, they’re not course equivalents so they can’t be used to satisfy the requirements. Furthermore, it seems, no CC has equivalents of these courses that are satisfactory to Berkeley. Strange.

Probably because the material taught isn’t satisfactory. When you transfer, you can have them review the courses and see if they will waive your major requirements. as-is it is just elective credit / will prepare you better for future courses.

I see. Thanks, bomerr!

That’d be sick if we both got into UCB. Where you from Cayton? Down south?
