Major GPA vs Overall GPA!????

Hey guys,

I know this question is one of the most populat questions asked however in my situation is pertaining to which should I post on my resume. My overall gpa is 3.01 however my major GPA is close to 3.8. What is your input?

Thank you,

The general advice I always heard was to put your GPA if it’s >3.0, and put your major GPA if it’s significantly higher than your overall GPA.

So in this case, I’d recommend just putting both.

thank you guys! If I were to apply for a job with lets say a Big 4 Firm or a big bank like Citigroup, JP Morgan etc. will this hurt my chances for an interview? I have a senior manager I know within Deliotte who will write a referral for me and a few people in JP and Citi who will do the same. Will this hurt my chances of getting selected?

If you’re applying to a big company like the ones you mentioned, you are going to be doing so through your school’s recruiting process (at least, that’s the most likely path), which means that you will need to adhere to your school’s guidelines about listing GPA on your resume. To be completely honest, I would include the major GPA only (making it clear that it is a major GPA) because it is so significantly higher than your cumulative GPA, but before doing that, I would absolutely check school guidelines - for me, I needed to include the number of courses contributing to the major GPA.

Would you say I have a shot for an interview?

In my experience, 3.7 was the general cutoff for getting on campus interviews at the companies you listed; a 3.01 is probably not going to cut it for you unless you have other factors that would outweigh your GPA, but a 3.77 puts you right in contention. Of course, thinking you don’t have much chance isn’t going to help you… put in your applications, spend time creating cover letters unique to the company (not form letters that you sub company names into), and see where things shake out.
