Major Help

Hey guys. I just got my October 14 SAT score report back and I'm very upset with my scores.
CR - 500
Math -560 (I have no clue what happened)
Writing 620 (I was expecting a 700)

The reason Im so upset is because I used the CB book, and I was getting 650+ in writing and around 6oo's for math. I was getting in the range of 570 to 650 in the blue book, and on test day I ended up leaving so many blank. CAn you tell me a book math workbook to help me bring up my math score. Im taking it in december again, and I need your help. Should I use Barrons Math Workbook for the New SAT or is that useless?

aww you're not a disgrace... you just used the wrong resources.

don't use the blue book for anything besides it's practice questions.

math: barron's math workbook for the new sat is a great book. it has tons of practice at a perhaps harder level than the real thing

cr: ummmm this is harder to say. you should get practice with as many sat reading passages as you can find. and build vocabulary too. kaplan's flip-o-matics are pretty convenient if you don't want to waste time with making your own flash cards

wr: umm you could try peterson's writing workbook or just learn grammar some other way.

I thought the College Board book is suppose to be the best in terms of giving yuou practice and raising your score. Well, thanks for the advice...i dont know how much studying vocab can help since im taking the december 2nd SAT. And critical reading...well, i just suck at that more than any other section on the SAT.

disgrace, first of all you should change your name to something positive...second of all did you actually review all of your questions and try to understand why you got them wrong? i would suggest sitting down and just reviewing each section, even if it takes hours...it's better to completely understand 1 test, than to take 10 tests...trust me on this.

reading and doing problems from books > whatever you can do with any test prep book out there.

buy actual algebra 1, geometry, and algebra 2 math books.

etti is totally right. You need to know what you're doing wrong.

I would say you need some overall SAT-taking help. CB has no strategy at all, just practice. I would highly recommend Cracking the SAT for strategy. The tests that come with it are really good too because they have answer explanations, which the CB tests are also lacking (my only real beef with them).

After you have a better understanding of SAT strategy, start pounding the practice questions. I have heard Barron's is good for math, but I would recommend Princeton Review for verbal.

I think the problem is that i work too slow in math. I sometimes get the harder questions in the math section and miss the easy ones because I look to hard into the problem. I realized that its not that I cant solve the problems, but I take too long to solve them. It takes me like half a minute to realize something significant in the problem, even though I already know the concept. Then I am left with very little time for the others. I will try Princeton Review for my reading, and Barron's for math. Then when im ready I will take 1 or 2 tests from Cracking the SATs. Hopefully, the explanations will help-cuz i don't have much time on my hands. Thank you for the advice everyone.
