Hi! I plan on attending University of Tampa in fall of 2014. (Haven't yet applied, but I like this school/it's affordable/easier for me to get in.) Unless I get into UPenn, this is pretty set.

I am trying to decide on a major. I'm stuck between regular Finance, or International Business/Finance with a minor in marketing. I want to travel overseas to help companies build advertising campaigns that reach between different languages. I know finance is really important, I feel like I could help with money somehow too.

I don't know if I should JUST focus on Finance, or if the International one is fine? I'm thinking of getting a job, so I'm looking long run here.

Thanks in advance!

The difference in competitiveness between UPenn (assuming Wharton) and University of Tampa is exceedingly massive in every way imaginable. Comparing the two colleges is akin to comparing Harvard to Michigan State. There are many, many, many excellent colleges that are less competitive than UPenn and more prestigious than the University of Tampa. In addition, most top colleges offer excellent financial aid so your finances shouldn’t be that much of a concern.

If you’re seriously interested in finance and business, you should know that the prestige of your undergrad college is the most important factor in your competitiveness for business positions. Top finance and business firms only want graduates from the best colleges. If you don’t go to a target school (i.e. a college with plenty of on-campus recruitment), your job application will be rejected regardless of your GPA or major.

As a high school student, you should focus on being admitted to the best undergraduate college possible. You’ll have plenty of time as an undergrad to decide which field of business appeals to you the most.
