I’m currently a freshman in college, and am majoring in linguistics with a minor in japanese. However, i don’t want to be a teacher or something like htat so I am thinking of adding a international business certificate. Would the certificate benefit me if I am looking to go into marketing, preferably with companies in Japan?
I would double major in marketing, but then I may have to stay in school for an extra year or two and I’m not sure if it’s worth it.
If anybody has any suggestions for a good major to pair with linguistics that could potentially get me into marketing, that would be appreciated.
thanks!
Why not just do a major in Japanese or Japanese Studies (instead of linguistics) + Marketing? Will that combination still require an extra year or two.
Whether or not a international business certificate will help depends on the content. Many schools do not allow students to major in international business unless they also do a major in one of the traditional core business specialties (e.g., accounting, management, marketing, finance, etc.) so that suggests it might not provide useful skills.
Relevant internships + language/cultural skills might be more important than a marketing degree.
Add computer science. Computational linguistics is a very practical, growing, employment-friendly field.
^^like, also statistics. Maybe the certificate…
Thanks for the help!
You’re overestimating the value of your “certificate”. You’d be 100x better if you can land some great summer jobs/internshps or a co-op job. Experience in an international business environment (along w/a decent amount of business/economics coursework) is what will be valued by potential employers.
