Hey CC MT experts. New question…
My son wants to pursue his performance degree in MT, but is hoping there is some sort of minor/certification in the technical side of theater. If anyone can chime in regarding schools and programs that offer both, that would be fantastic. And if you or your kiddos were able to garner enough tech knowledge (without a minor) to subsidize an MT career, I’d really appreciate hearing about it. Thanks a million!
When my D was looking I remember that Kent State offered several theatre tech minors. But if you are in the BFA program it would be really challenging to take a minor due to the number of required classes/units. That will be true at a lot of places, but not all. Need to check with each school about that. And whether theatre majors are allowed to minor in theatre. Again varies by school.
Most programs we saw (BFA or BA) required at least one intro tech theatre class. Then some production credits. Is that enough to subsidize an MT career - you could probably help with some jobs but the main ones probably require more training and experience. But those here more closely aligned with theatre might offer better perspective on that.
I teach at James Madison in VA. It is possible for students in the MT program to take classes in design and technical areas, and have opportunities to design. Students in the program can be hired as paid as scenic, lighting, sound, and costume shop assistants, and we also employ students to work in management areas. Please feel free to PM or email me with any specific questions.
My D is a musical theatre major at NYU New Studio on Broadway, with a work study job in production. When she graduates, she will have enough experience as a dresser/costumer to qualify as a dresser on Broadway while auditioning during the day! She loves both aspects of theatre life. At NYU TIsch, you can attend NSB for two years and actually switch to Production and Design for professional training. This way, your son can still work in the theatre either backstage or onstage. The opportunities alone in NYC cannot be duplicated. Anywhere.
This is fantastic info - not sure how I missed it earlier, but thank you - times a million!
