Major Issues

Over the last couple months I have been filling out applications, but about half way through I changed my mind on my preferred major. This means that the first 2 or 3 applications I did were for a major I no longer have interest in. If it was you, would you email the school and have them change it before decisions, or wait until you get there and then try to transfer?
Thanks

It depends on the school. If the major is in the same college, it is generally easy to change majors. However, if the major is in a different, more competitive college then it will not be so easy. Some majors also might have separate applications at the end of freshman or sophomore year.

You should do some research and find out how hard it is to transfer majors at each school. If it is hard to transfer, then you should email admissions and let them know before decisions are made.

If you want to change from one school to another (ex. liberal arts to business), then you should notify the school. If you want to change within the school you applied to (ex. psychology to anthropology in the liberal arts school or finance to accounting in a business school) then that should not be an issue.

Sometimes it can look bad if you want to change your major, especially if going from a non competitive major to a competitive one. I would call the college’s you already applied to (with the wrong major) and explain your situation. Switching majors might not be that big of a deal, so I’d just call or email and ask. Look on the websites for the colleges you want to switch your major at, and see how difficult it would be to switch majors. It might be easier to switch before starting college, but sometimes it’s easier to wait until you actually start.
