Major matters in admissions?

I was wondering if your selected major can impact selection. For example, if one has low sat scores, it would not be wise for them to apply for a very difficult major like biology, or would it not matter? Even if the applicant shows strong interest in the major? Is it best to just put undecided? Does this vary for CALS as opposed to Eng or CAS?

I look forward to reading your opinions!

I've heard that this is partially true. For example, a department/major which is underrepresented or in need of talented students may contact the admissions office to encourage recruiting/selection for that major. I think these are called institution priorities. SAT II scores may affect how the school thinks you can handle the major but I doubt these scores play too large of a role because colleges are aware students change their interests frequently. I'm not sure about the answer to your CALS vs. CAS question.

i know that AEM and biology at agls are probably the two toughest within that school

Major matters in CALS, but not CAS. CAS does general admissions while CALS does them by major.

thanks for your responses...
if you are, say applying to CALS, and you show EC's that have much focus on bio, have a good satII biology, but average satI (~2100), would it be wise to apply undecided? I am assuming admissions for bio at CALS is difficult.
oh, and what about other more specific bio majors like biochem or molecular bio.?

Those are techically still classified under the bio major. Biochem, moelcular bio, genetics, etc. are referred to as concentrations within the bio major.

i thought you havta choose a major if you apply to cals?

The college of engineering has the highest acceptance rate, but most people who apply are well qualified.
