Major/Minor Confusion

Hi guys,

I was wondering if it's possible to major in Communications/Journalism, and minor in Biological Sciences, then go on to med school. The thing is, I'm torn between journalism and medicine, which I know are two radically different fields. I know that med schools are looking for students with majors other than Bio, and to me, it seems that if I received a degree in journalism while having been educated in bio, I'd be prepared for med school.
Do you think that would work, or should I just major in Biological Sciences?
Thanks in advance :)

Actually from what I've heard, most people who major in biological sciences don't go to med school.

I don't see why it would be a problem for you to pursue a degree in journalism. Like you said, med schools are looking for diversity. They're going to teach you the bio/chem you need to become a doctor in med school anyways.

Thanks for your feedback, hallowarts! Anyone else have an input on the situation?

It should be no problem. The most important thing for med school is not what you major in, but that you fulfill all the course prerequisites - take a look at some med schools you may be interested in, or talk to your advisor and career counseling services once you get to campus, to make sure your bases are covered. And make sure that you show a passion for medicine outside your studies: volunteer in a hospital, do research, etc.

Medicine and journalism may not be as far apart as you think they are... have you considered becoming a medical writer, or a science journalist?

You don't even have to minor in biology to go to medical school. Just take the prereqs and major/minor in whatever you would like.
