I'm a rising senior, looking heavily into NYU. I'd like to major in journalism and minor in drama. Can I do that? I was reading up on Tisch and it said that if I'm not accepted there, I can't attend NYU. That confused me...and sent me into a state of panic. Can someone please explain?

Here are my scores so you can tell me if I even have a chance.
SAT: Critical Reading 720
Math 620
Writing 720
Essay 11

ACT 31
I've taken 7 AP classes, and I'll be taking 5 my senior year
I'll be retaking both the SAT and the ACT shortly. Thank you!

When you apply to NYU, you apply to a specific school at NYU. And you can only apply to one (after which point you have to wait a year to re-apply, I believe).

Furthermore, as far as I know, you can’t actually minor in something like drama at Tisch. When you go to Tisch, your primary major is within the specific school to which you get accepted. So, for instance, I got into Tisch’s Film & TV program, so my primary major is Film & TV. Once in Tisch, after attending NYU a year, you can declare a second major. So if you wanted to do journalism too, you’d either have to pursue it as a second major (which may be really tough) or pursue it as a minor.

Does that make sense?

I found this really shocking myself because I wanted to go to CAS for philosophy but take advantage of the film courses at Tisch. I ultimately decided to attend Tisch directly, and I was accepted.

Depending on who you talk to, you might have better or worse chances getting into Tisch. Supposedly, Tisch is more lenient when it comes to GPA/SATs and such, but they are very competitive within the department, so a lot of it depends on your creative review. And, yes, if you get rejected from Tisch, you get rejected from NYU as a whole.

Of course, if you figure your chances higher to get into CAS than Tisch, you could always go to CAS with an emphasis on journalism, wait a year, and then internal transfer to Tisch, at which point your primary major would switch to drama. But you may have lower chances getting into Tisch from NYU than directly from high school. Maybe another user can comment on this.

That’s really helpful. Thank you. My passion is ultimately in theater, but I wanted to major in journalism so I have a something strong to fall back on. So basically my best bet would be to transfer into Tisch my sophomore year, if I was accepted. I can take classes in other colleges, correct? I can still study journalism with drama as my primary focus?

It is very hard to get into Tisch drama–especially as a transfer. If majoring in drama is your ultimate goal, I would strongly advise that you apply to it as a Freshman. If you don’t get in, chances are very high that you would not have made it as a transfer student either.

If you have concerns about your level of talent / audition skills then you should be working on those this summer into fall. If you are still not satisfied, and still want NYU over other drama programs, then apply as a journalism major and take open classes in Tisch or a minor that touches upon theater from a different perspective–applied theater or producing. You can also take dramatic literature classes in the English dept (also a minor) and take part in shows that are open to non-Tisch drama majors.

Part of my hesitation is that I REALLY don’t want to risk not getting into NYU. I’d be devastated

Alex

You should have some confidence in your dramatic ability and ability to audition well if you go for Tisch. If you feel shaky about your talent and you do not have outstanding recommendations in drama, then you should justnfocus on getting into CAS for journalism.

If you become motivated to major in drama and you have gotten some good ECs to back this up once you are in CAS, then you can try for aninternal transfer to Tisch. It may be competitive but not unheard of. Depends on your motivation and talent (be realistic and get feedback on your abilities in drama from people who can be objective and honest with you). Then worst case scenario, you stay as a journalism major in CAS and declare drama or some form of drama studies as a minor.

First things first. You need to consider your best chances of getting into NYU. If it is through CAS, then that may be the better route to go, especiallysince your primary interest right now is journalism. And CAS is less selective compared to Tisch drama. Of course, it depends on a realistic assessment of your strengths and potentials.

I am not sure you can major in journalism. One of D’s roommates last year was interested in that field but said something about it not being a major. At Tisch, it is pretty easy to minor or even double major in a CAS field by using your electives for that field. But it does not work the other way around because most Tisch courses are only for Tisch students.

One more thing regarding Transfers INTO Tisch - the studio system used requires most if not all Transfer students to start at 1st year. Those who transfer from other U’s generally get credit for some of their theatre studies classes, and gen eds, but still have to start at the beginning for studio.

writestuff, Thanks for calling attention to the Journalism major at CAS. The major requires a second major in CAS, so it will be very difficult, if not impossible to MINOR in drama studies. Yes, the only drama-related studies may be thru very restricted Open Arts courses offered at Tisch. Even so, the double major requirement for journalism majors at CAS will makebthe scheduling a nightmare.

Also, read this thread, particularly Post #4 to see how difficult scheduling of classes can be as a journalism double major.

Note that this is an older thread and there may be some changes since the thread was posted. But it gives the OP some idea of the difficulty, if not impossibility of doing majors/ minors across schools for both journalism and drama. :(

Yes, I realized this a few hours ago. I spent an hour figuring it out on NYU’s website. I’m so lost. I don’t know what to do

I think you have to figure out what is more important to you, journalism or drama and also your chances for getting into CAS vs. Tisch. Most likely, you have a better shot at CAS, based on preliminary assessment of your stats but without knowledge of your ECs, essay, recs, etc. Also, your HS classes seem to have enough rigor ( with 12 APs by end of senior year). I have no knowledge of your talent in drama, so this may be a factor in whether you want to pursue Tisch. Your talent and motivation in the field should help guide you in the decision. Also, it depends on how much you want into NYU. If you are set on being at NYU, it might be better to go with the school you have a better chance at and concentrate on producing the best application you can for that particular school.

drama is by far more important to me. My GPA is a 3.9 (unweighted, I believe).
ECs: drama club, symphonic orchestra, chamber orchestra, SADD, newspaper, national honor society, tri-m, foreign language honor society, musical (this and drama are two different things in my school), mural painting, GSA
I recently won a TOBY teen theater award for my role in Neil Simon’s “Fools”.
While drama is extremely important to me, so is going to NYU. I’ll figure it out. I’ll probably wind up auditioning for Tisch for my freshman year, give it my all, and if I don’t get in, maybe I’ll go to Emerson. Thank you for all your help

Yes, sometimes it is important to give your all to the object that is
Most important to you and then let the chops fall where they will.

I wish you the very best! By the way, your ECs look strong and
Also drama ECs.

may I ask which school you study at in NYU, and how you are enjoying it?

Alex,

I am the parent of a CAS student who wants to transfer into Tisch (latest development for S). I also taught at the bachelors and masters levels before retiring.

oh wow! I wish him/her the best of luck!

Thanks. Again, the best to you. I hope it all works out well for you. Drop back in to let us know what happens if you get a chance!

Evolving…Tisch huh??? That’s news! Hope it works out!

Writestuff, thanks. I just pm’ed you. :)
