Major/Minor Recommendations?

Hi there,

I’m sure this is something that has been brought up by several other users, but I am very stressed about what I should study in undergrad and would love some feedback/recommendations.

I am interested in topics such as comparative politics, human interactions, psychology, and cultures. I am also a skilled in writing. I am currently an NSLI-Y semi finalist and have also applied to CBYX. So far, I have considered psychology, anthropology, international relations, public policy, political science as potential majors/minors and women’s studies as a minor. I have some proficiency in the German language and also have an interest in learning Hindi. I am also aware that my education would extend beyond that of undergrad.

I am worried about the applicability of the majors I am looking at, particularly anthropology.

An ideal career would be to work for an NGO, non-profit, government, or a research institution; perhaps something related to international development.

Any feedback/advice/recommendations would be incredibly helpful! Thank you.

You can major in any of those fields and end up working for any of those kinds of organizations. Social science majors in particular tend to be good for going into that kind of work. You actually don’t have to go to school beyond undergrad if you don’t want to, although it may help you advance in your chosen career depending on what it is.

Don’t be stressed about this. You can always choose after you go to college: pick a few classes to take in your freshman year, flip through a course catalog, see what seems interesting. And know that your choice won’t make or break your future career, so you can feel free to pick whatever feels like it fits you best.

Thank you so much!!

We have a lot of similar interests. I am planning to major in international relations, and it sounds like that would be right up your alley as well. You’re still in high school too, so you shouldn’t be stressed about what you want to study yet. At nearly every college you don’t even have to declare a major until sometime during your sophomore year. You’ve still got plenty of time, and if you can’t figure it out before college, it’s not big deal. You’ll probably figure it out as you take some introductory courses wherever you decide to enroll after high school.

Good luck!
