I'm sorry if this is a dumb question, but can someone tell me what makes a minor a minor, and a major a major? What makes them different? I know a major is usually what you want to pursue a career in but does a minor have to be related to that? Like if I want to be a teacher after college but maybe a counselor down the road would a psychology minor do anything for me? Sorry if this is the wrong section but I couldn't find where else to put it.
Thank you :)

A major is your main field of study in college; minor is just that, a minor field of study. Major has more credits, minor has less. A typical major might have 10-12 courses, and a minor 5-6, of that helps explain it. If you want to be a teacher you need to major in Education. No, a minor doesn’t have to be related to your major, although it can be. For the psych minor, it also depends what you want to teach. If you want to get an Education degree in secondary ed, you could have social studies as a your concentration and psych would fit in there. If you want to teach, say, elementary ed, or something else, then it would be different. Just having a minor in something probably won’t help for being a counselor, depending on what kind of counselor- a school counselor, or like a formal counseling/psychologist/psychiatrist thing, which would require more schooling.

Thank you. I mean I figured that’s what it was, but like why do you need it? I would want to be like a school counselor.

You don’t NEED to have a minor. You might minor in something you’re really interested in if you’re studying something that you’re less passionate about. Personal example: a good friend of mine is studying biology/chemistry as her major, but minoring in art because she’s really passionate about it. She knows she couldn’t make a career out of it, but wants to pursue it more at the college level.

You could minor in a language if you wanted to work in a school district with a large international population (i.e., Arizona, New Mexico, etc.).

ooh i though you NEEDED a major. Ok then that makes sense now. Thank you :)

You do NEED a MAJOR. You don’t have to have a MINOR though.

i meant minor sorry.
