Is there a college out there that will let a student major in print journalism and minor in broadcast? I know that sounds crazy, but I was at a journalism conference with someone who is now going to some school in Missouri where she is apparently majoring in photojournalism and minoring in broadcast. I haven't been in contact with her, I just overheard that this was her academic plan so I can't ask her myself. It wasn't at Mizzou, but some Ozarks college or something in Missouri.

If that's not possible, what is a good minor to pursue when majoring in journalism? I was thinking Spanish (I'm Mexican-American) because there's the possibility of working at a Spanish-language paper, and because being bilingual is always a plus.

I've heard of others taking political science or English.

The way I hear it is that the journalism degree itself isn't very useful, except by being in the journalism school you'll definitely have lots of opportunities to be working in the field during college. Most journalists then decide to double major/minor/or concentrate in an area of interest so that they have something to write about! That's why political science is a popular one, if you are into investigative reporting, etc.

As far as double majoring in two fields of journalism, I think that's pretty useless. The first year in most journalism schools you'll have plenty of time to explore different fields of communication and see what interests you most. Also, I think if you have a dual interest in broadcast and print, you should major in whatever interests you most but get involved in campus organizations (or internships, depending on your level of interest) that relates to the other one. For example, if you're majoring in broadcast, work on a school paper.

As far as what your concentration is, that's up to you...there are so many fields that interest myself, so I definitely haven't picked a concentration yet! I'm interested in film/music, so I'm thinking about taking film and music classes and majoring in American Studies; also it's been a dream of mine to be a photojournalist for National Geographic...so I'd double major in photojournalism and history or anthropology maybe, or even environmental/conservation science. OR you could write about business, double major in international relations or economics.

^I don't know if schools even offer a minor in journalism...Different journalism schools have different policies about this, so you'd end up going the track the school recommends, I'd imagine. Ex. at Northwestern you're expected to double major, and at some places you are expected only to "concetrate" in an area. In either case I doubt the workload is overwhelming or that the depth of your liberal arts education is not sufficient. After all, they designed the programs that way for a reason shrug.
