I'm a senior in high school and very interested in marketing. However I have been told that a degree in marketing is very common and not compelling to employers and won't get you a great job. I'm also interested in money and investments so would majoring in finance help me get a job. Or a double major in marketing and finance. I'm interested in working in the cosmetic industry because I love makeup and interested in business. I live near NYC so once I start college I'll apply for internships.

Marketing is a great job plus marketers are becoming increasingly dependent on business analytics to guide decisions. A new group of newly trained marketers with these skills is needed. But, you have an interest in the cosmetics industry which I see as too narrowly focused. If you love cosmetics, you could study chemistry so you could make them but I think that as a marketer, you’ll find a better career if you truly love marketing. Most companies are large and diversified. There aren’t many pure cosmetics companies but you could widen your interests to the fashion industry or department stores and retail or both plus more. Think about it.

The reason people think it’s hard to find a marketing job is because they want to work in a narrow niche and must compete with everyone willing to take a marketing job anywhere. Then, there are too many marketers. Otherwise, demand is pretty good. Plus, knowing the competition is fierce, class rank and GPA are worth fighting to keep as high as possible. The lower ranking students will think finding a job is hard compared to top students.

If you are really passionate, the Fashion Institute of Technology has a major in Cosmetics and Fragrance Marketing, which may peak your interest. Marketing is projected to have a large job growth by 2020, so marketing as a market (ba-dum-tss) will be a good place to flourish. Good Luck!
