My goal is to become a clinical
psychologist , which I know is going to require grad school. Does grad school for clinical psychology require either a
major or a minor in psychology in
undergrad school? If so, does it make a difference for which one I chose?
Thanks.
Yes, you should major in psychology if you want to get a PhD in psychology.
@julliet I was planning on majoring in something else that I wouldn’t need grad school for to deal with the expenses of my loans, so is it possible to go to grad school with just a minor in psych?
It’s possible, but you won’t be as competitive. This is particularly true in clinical psychology - those programs are really, super competitive - you’ll be much better off with a major in psychology.
If you want to work for a few years after college, though, you can totally do that with a major in psychology. I know lots of psychology majors who have jobs with “just” a bachelor’s degree.
There’s also the option of double majoring, if you want.
@julliet Yea, I was thinking of doing either a double major with psych and something else or doing my school’s pre-occupational therapy program. Thanks!
Check a few things out before majoring in Psychology. Your best bet, if you’re super stoked on becoming a psychologist is researching the field. A personal friend has a Ph.D. in Psychology, never made a B, and went to a reputable school and now works the suicide hotlines and a whopping $18/hr as a senior supervisor…
Psychology Degrees were the #1 awarded degrees for Women last year, and continue to gain more and more students.
Whatever you do in college, make sure its competitive and make sure you’re in the top 10% of your graduating class. If you want to learn about it, I recommend making it your minor, finding a job as an assistant in the firm and trying to work your way up in the firm / business while getting paid and possibly returning to school if you find the money to be there. Degrees are expensive and a gamble so do your homework.
If you feel a little lost or something around those lines I recommend YouTube and look for testimonies.

Mean wages of clinical psychologists are about $65-85K, depending on what setting you work in and your geographical location. Most PhD programs in clinical psychology also provide full funding for accepted students.
