<p>My major is Geological Sciences Paleontology. I'm attending the community colleges in the San Diego area, City, Mesa, and Miramar. San Diego State is the only college in California that offers Paleontology as a major, so I have to get into it somehow.
I'm taking all my general Ed and my major prep classes before I transfer, obviously. However, there are three classes on my major prep list that are not offered at City, Mesa, or Miramar. Since all majors at SDSU are impacted, I'm worried about not finishing my major prep. All major prep classes must be completed. I'm not sure what to do. My counselor just told me not to worry about it, he was half asleep when I was speaking to him though.
Grossmont College offers 2 of the major prep classes, but I'm worried that I would become enrolled into that college but wont be able to sign up for any classes due to priority registration.
Yet that would still leave me with just one class not offered anywhere else. Does anyone know what I can do?</p>
<p>I was told that I needed to try to get my major prep done, no matter where I went. I only needed one class, and it was only offered at Mesa or Pasadena CC. I lived in Temecula at the time, with a 4 year old, and was talking 18 units at Palomar. There was no way I could fit the class in.
So, I had all general ed classes done, all but one major prep done, 3.4 GPA. San Marcos doesn’t offer Art History, so I had priority at SDSU(according to multiple counselors). I was denied admission. I appealed, included two letters of reference, proof that my college didn’t offer the one class, and some extenuating circumstances concerning my guardianship of my nephew with my explanation, and I ended up being admitted (found out in JULY!). I suggest really really trying to get all of your major prep classes done. You can always crash classes if they are full. Or look into cross campus enrollment and do the classes at SDSU</p>
<p>Thank you for your reply. That’s what I’ve been thinking would happen.</p>
<p>Well, I finally decided to email a person who works in the Geology department at SDSU. This is what he said:</p>
<p>"As long as you meet the minimum requirements you can apply to transfer to SDSU
Upper-division transfer applicants must meet the following minimum requirements to be considered for admission:</p>
<p>Complete 60 or more transferable semester (or 90 or more quarter) units by the end of spring 2015
Complete a minimum of 30 units of General Education
Complete with a “C” grade or higher, the following General Education courses, known as the “Golden Four”
Oral Communication: Basic public speaking course. Other communication courses that are certified by a California community college will be accepted.
Written Communication: Typically a freshman composition course that emphasizes essay writing or reading and writing concurrently.
Critical Thinking: Typically your second semester composition or writing course, or a course in reasoning and effective argumentative writing.
Mathematics: This course must be above the level of intermediate algebra.
Earn the grade point average (GPA) required for the major to which the applicant is applying at the time of application and final transcript review.
The more you complete of the courses in the AST (Associate Degree for Transfer ) or the TAG (Local Transfer Admission Guarantee) the better your chances for admission, since all SDSU majors are impacted programs, but completion of all the major prep is not required to apply or be accepted.
Finishing all the lower division prep is not a requirement for admission - very few students - almost none - are able to do this because of the general unavailability of courses like mineralogy.</p>
<p>In Fall 2014 we had 58 transfer students apply and 10 were admitted. Campus is currently reevaluating their managed enrollment percentages for the geology major because of the sharp increase in the number of applicants over the past few years. So we hope to see a increase in the number of qualified transfer students accepted into the program."</p>
