I am a little confused by both ASSIST and UCLA's transfer information.

Ideally, I would like to apply as an anthropology BS major.

For a BS in anthropology, UCLA has this under major preparation:

Anthropology (B.S.)

* one course in human evolution
* one course in archaeology
* one course in sociocultural anthropology
* one course in culture and communication
* one course in statistics
* one year of general biology with lab for the major
* one year of calculus
* one year of general chemistry with lab
* one year of calculus-based physics with lab
* one lower division course in organic chemistry

Am I confused? This sort of seems like a lot for two years in a CC, especially when you through GE requirements in there...

not everyone stays for 2 yrs… some take even longer… it shouldnt be too confusing, just pull up your CCC, then UCLA, and then anthro BS, and it should tell you exactly which classes you need to take. some majors require just as much as this, if not more, like various engineering majors. i can see why most people would pursue anthro BA rather than the BS, like myself (or rather, as my alternate major)

I just look at assist.org and that looks about right. It’s ten classes so I would try to spread it out enough to fit in the IGETC cerfied GE classes as well. Many of these classes I am sure fit into the IGETC as well so you’ll be able to fullfill your major pre-reqs as well as general ed. Overall, I would just spread it out by semester, maybe 3, 3, 2, 2 for all ten classes, not to mention you have a summer in between to take maybe 1 or 2 classes. You should be fine.

hopefully your ccc doesn’t offer all of those classes and you can take them after transfer (if they’re not offered, it’s not counted against you when you apply)

to be competitive you gotta do them all, i would definetely stress finishing every single one with hopes for ucla. i honestly believe you’ll be okay. how many have you done so far, any?

A lot of those classes will be very challenging even for someone with strong skills in math and science. You should really think whether the extra difficulty and added year or more will it will take to transfer will be worth it as opposed to the BA.

the only thing that matters for med school is your gpa and mcat score… it doesnt matter what major you are. i have a friend who had a 4.0 gpa and was a music major. all he ever did was play the classical korean drum, and hes at med school

^^ true, but it would make sense to do a bachelors of science as some of the pre reqs for med school are:

1 year gen chem (w/ lab)
1 year Ochem (w/ lab)
1 year physics(w/ lab)
1 semester biochem (upper div, not sure if there is a required lab component)

do what you want, but if you’re going to apply to med school you need to have all of these completed (probably more b/c there are other pre reqs that vary from med school to med school) and the BS contains most of these pre reqs

don’t forget that you can always switch from BS to BA after you transfer

Just to be clear…are these the requirements for actually OBTAINING a BS? From what I can tell, the requirements for getting the degree and preparing for the major seem to be the same…

You cannot finish all of those requirements in a year. Some of those classes you wouldn’t even have the prerequisites met to be eligible to take them for at least a year.

Transfer applicants to the Anthropology B.S. major with 90 or more units must complete as many of the following introductory courses as possible prior to admission to UCLA: one human evolution course, one archaeology course, one sociocultural anthropology course, one culture and communication course, two general biology courses for majors, one year of calculus, one year of general chemistry with laboratory, one year of general physics with laboratory, and one lower division organic chemistry course.

This makes it all seem less dreary, considering I am going to be transferring with a bit over 60 units, yes?

I am behind on my math as I didn’t pay attention in high school and took a bit of a break before going to CC. I am now finishing my last algebra course, and will be able to transfer into a UC-acceptable math in the Fall.

I will be able to take two during the summer, which will lighten the load a lot. Also, I checked all of the pre-requisites and I have done them all.

It shouldn’t be a problem. I am a compulsive worker who thrives when stressed.

Your work ethic isn’t the problem, it’s literally the time to do it in. I took chem/calc/physics all together each quarter and you just could not fit another lab into that schedule. You also say you are finishing algebra, which means just for math you need take trig, then precalc, then calc 1, then calc 2, then calc 3 (and calc 4 if that is the way your school does it, that is how mine does). Your real deal-breaker though is that you cannot take the first calc-based physics until you’re in your second calc class. If you started taking trig over the summer system the earliest you could be taking your second calc would be :summer=trig, fall=precalc,winter=calc1,spring=calc 2. Right here you can see that you can’t finish the math by the end of next year but even worse is that you can’t even start taking physics until Spring of next year when you would potentially need to have them done. I’m not trying to be a jerk or anything bringing all this out I’m just trying to show you that if you really want the BS then you really would have to stay another year or just not finish all the prereqs. I was in the same situation when I switched from business to engineering and did ultimately have to stay another year myself.

maybe pick another major with a science based program other than anthropology if it’s not going to work for you. if you don’t finish all of the pre-reqs your chances for ucla will be low.
